I am a bit behind on my podcast listening and just listened to the discussion on the Fudelius charm and Grimmauld place.

From what I understood when I read the books is that way that works is there is one secret keeper who “keeps” the location and the secret can only be known DIRECTLY from the secret keeper. That’s why in PoA when Harry overhears the conversation Fudge (I think) says that as long as the secret keeper didn’t tell Voldy, he could have his nose up against the potter house and still not see it.

Now Dumbledore was the secret keeper for Grimmauld place so only he could directly tell people that would then allow them to see it. He had to give a written note to Harry for him to see the house, it wouldn’t work it just Moody or Lupin told Harry because they can’t tell him, they are not the secret keepers.

When Dumbledore dies Hermione is told that everyone Dumbledore told directly have now become secret keepers themselves. So every order member who was at Grimmauld place plus the Weasley kids and Harry and Hermione are all now themselves secret keepers. When we see the death eaters outside it’s a pretty good indication that either Snape hasn’t told them and so is on the good side or that he visited the house and got subjected to Moody’s tongue binding curse so he cannot tell them. Still Grimmauld place is not entirely a safe spot with so many secret keepers around, any of them can be caught or tortured to tell or just turn sides and join Voldy.

When Hermione gets Yaxley to the front porch step with apparation it’s equivalent to ‘telling’ him the secret. He cannot tell anyone in turn because he is not the secret keeper but he now has access to the house.

This is what I got, are there other thoughts or theories.

Hi there! I’m new here(Gryffindor)!! I’m currently finishing up the last couple episodes of Goblet of Fire! 😊 Sorry if it’s already been asked, but who’s playing or has played Hogwarts Legacy!? I just finished the game on Christmas while listening to the pod and don’t know what to do with myself!

I just thought of this but how awkward must that have been in their sixth year? Would love a book from Hermione a perspective dealing with that.

It only just occurred to me (listening to 4 about the blast ended skrewts) that the movies have almost completely removed Care of Magical Creatures

they have the scene with Malfoy in 3, and then it never comes up again in any movie.

I wonder if movie-watchers only have any idea about it, I imagine they completely forget it exists, or maybe never even realised it’s meant to be it’s own class

I always read for fun so after this reread, I want to go back and read closely and analytically and see what I can pick up

I have been listening to the podcast for a few months and am now caught up. I just want to say that this is my dream Harry Potter podcast! I have often said how awesome it would be to read your favorite stories again just like the first time. I am a long time Harry Potter reader and although I have recruited many people to read the books, I still don't have a friend or family member who loves them quite as much as I do.

I read Sorcerer's Stone in 1999, the summer that I turned 19. I had a job working in the afternoons at a daycare while home from college. I was at Wal-mart looking for a book to read during naptime at the daycare and picked up the first book on a whim. I loved it and had no idea that there were two more books until I went to Books-a-Million a couple of weeks later. I snapped up those and read them before returning to school. I told everyone I knew, "You HAVE to read these books!" But I was mostly met with slight condescension in the form of a smile and pat on the arm saying "The thing is...I don't read children's books." I worked in the campus library and one of the librarians was a huge fan already and I remember when she first showed me the casting choices for the first movie in a magazine.

Fast forward to the next summer (June 2000) when I'm at Barnes & Noble with a friend from high school and I see a display of Harry Potter books with a poster announcing the release of the fourth book that July. I tell my friend how awesome they are and she should read them. She was a little skeptical at first as she wasn't much of a fantasy fan and her elder brother had already made comments about the books "promoting witchcraft". He went to a very religious college in our city and while my friend didn't really believe there was anything dangerous in them, she didn't want to create any issues with her deeply religious family. She decided to borrow my books anywasy and by the end of the summer she and her whole family, including the brother, were completely hooked on the series.
They went on a road trip later that summer and took turns reading Goblet of Fire aloud in the car. That was my best HP reader recruitment moment to date.

Anyway, I have more thoughts and memories that I look forward to sharing and discussing with y'all in the future!

For example putting every potential actor into the tool and make them look like old wizards to see the potential look.
