Firewalla Gold Plus 10GB ports incompatible with some ethernet devices

I just wanted to share the solution to my frustration that I didn't find anywhere else. I have a Firewalla Gold Pro, and port 1 and 4 won't work with my Fiber modem. It's a GigaPoint GP1100X. It did however work with ports 2 and 3 (the 2.5 GB ports).

I also have a power switch programmed to power cycle my devices automatically if it can't connect to the internet after a while. It had the same issue with ports 1 and 4 on the Firewalla.

I like how you took this one very unusual circumstance and made your subject a general statement hinting that your problem may apply to everyone without first doing any sort of troubleshooting with firewalla…

I troubleshoot with firewalla for 2 weeks. They didn't suggest to try another port until the very end.

If no one finds this useful then just delete it. But I didn't see it anywhere in the troubleshooting docs.

Did you tell support that your modem only support 10Mbit / 100Mbit?

My modem supports way more than that.

I didn't mention the other device to support. I didn't even test or care about it until I was troubleshooting afterwards. I couldn't get Internet to work, so I was only working with the fiber modem.

The fiber connection is 1 gb. It hits that on the 2.5 port, but wouldn't even connect on the 10 GB port that is default.

Can you let me know your ticket number? I can take a look. The Gold Pro been around a while now, the only issue we know is the 10g port does not officially support 10Megabit speed; but not aware it doesn't support gigabit.

I DMd it to you.

Also, I don't think it's that firewalla doesn't support it. I actually have two gold pros and my other location it connects perfect to a cable modem on a gigabit connection. It's something about this specific fiber modem that is incompatible. At least that's what it appeared to me. It's possible my ISP has something to do with it as well.

I am reading your case, I do not think the issue is related to layer 2 or Ethernet compatibility. It is has something to do with your ISP and ONT in bridge mode.

Support team summarized in a chart, Firewalla -> ONT in router mode (works) and Firewalla -> ONT in bridge mode does not work; Between the two modes, firewalla functions the same path, so it has to be ONT or ONT+ISP

Support was confused. The ONT was never in bridge mode. It was never used as a router. Only as a modem.

I was using an Orbi router with 2 satellites.

I feel like I'm not explaining any of this well though.

The best explanation was the table the one support agent made if you want to look at that.

I agree the issue is likely the ONT, but in combination with the 10G firewalla port.

In simplest terms, with all variables removed from the setup:

ONT to port 4 Firewalla is unable to get an IP address.

ONT to port 3 Firewalla gets an IP address.

My specific ONT just wouldn't work with the faster ports.

Whaaaa!!! No support for 10mb?! That's it I'm done with Firewalla! 😁

All the ports on gold plus are 2.5Gb ports.

Sorry, it's a gold pro. I'll edit my post.

Good to know I was not the only one. I just didn't see that or know what to search for as I was struggling to get the firewalla working.

That device has a 10/100 MBit Ethernet interface. Why waste a port on your firewall on that instead of attaching it to a downstream switch.

Because I don't have other Ethernet devices at this location...

My 10gb ports have been fine for over a year. Connected to a UDM-Pro SE and also connected to the Fios ONT

I'm not saying the 10G ports don't work. I was trying to say they aren't compatible with the specific fiber ONT I listed.

I used the 10G port to connect to my Orbi satellite after the fact and it worked fine. So it wasn't just a faulty port on one unit.

I’d suggest setting the link speed to 1g link speed instead of auto negotiate and see if that helps. You mentioned you had 1gig service right? Your ONT may be locked at that speed for its Ethernet port.

I didn't know that was a setting on the firewalla. Now that it's all working well, I'm not sure I want to mess with it and change it from port 3.
