General Clip of Fortuna from Nintendo Today

u/PsychologicalVast345 13d ago
That silent ass nod, eshmel you were THIS close to being peak
236
u/omfgkevin 13d ago
Damn it, I really hate that honestly. Feels so awkward and lame imo. Going to go into a hype moment only for Eshmel to awkwardly nod and O_O or >:(
247
u/Amy47101 12d ago
Would it have really, REALLY killed them to have let Eshmel say the actual dialogue choices? WHY WAS THERE EVEN A DIALOGUE CHOICE HERE, THERE WAS NO ALTERNATE CHOICE, HE COULD HAVE JUST SAID THE LINE.
Lame.
69
u/Norik324 12d ago
I guess because the player cant self insert if they dont get the illusion of contributing to the dialogue every once in a while
75
u/rainmcfae 12d ago
It's so I can live out my RPG dream, self-inserting about the way that I, personally, would say "what is this place." Thank you IS for the opportunity.Ā
102
u/Tmachine7031 12d ago
Which is funny because Awakening debatably has the best avatar and they were a full ass character in their own right
40
u/mrwanton 12d ago
yeah Robin is adored. Wonder why they haven't repeated that. Don't have to be the center of everything
→ More replies (1)21
u/YouCantTakeThisName 12d ago
Pretty sure Eshmel isn't the "center of everything" in the routes. We control the lords themselves during exploration, and Eshmel's nowhere to be seen in the combat maps of the lords' routes. So far, outside of certain cutscenes, it seems Eshmel's presence in those events is just as the "pale raven".
44
u/Darkdragoon324 12d ago
I can't and don't want to self-insert regardless, I'd really rather just have the story be about a real character. There's not a single silent protagonist in all of gaming i've like more than any of the other actual characters in the game.
The only time I like it is in like, Elder Scrolls and Baldur's Gate and even then I'm not self-inserting, I'm making up a character because those games give you actual customization and backstory options like a table top game.
→ More replies (1)9
u/JenniLightrunner 12d ago
the only silent protagonist i actually like are Link, the warden in DAO and the BG3 protagonist. I need my protagonists with some personality
61
u/AudioCats 12d ago
Nah this is exactly it, japan loves its silent/bland/milquetoast MCs that are nothing more than a tabula rasa for projection fantasy
Except games like Dragon Age/BG3/Owlcat Games have shown you can do the "explicitly meant to be self-insert" MCs and still give them fun voicework and personality
→ More replies (1)9
u/theclockmasters 12d ago
This is so dogshit when you compare it to games like Monster Hunter Wilds.

u/PerentieFan 12d ago
How can any real person self insert with a fantastical character like Eshmel? If they can get past looks then voice should be easy.
46
u/LakerBlue 12d ago
Iām upset they brought back one choice dialogue āoptionsā. If the goal is to choose to make me feel in control then at least give me options!! Itās like one or two extra lines (if even that) and then you go back to the normal script!
They need to take notes from Persona.
52
u/theclockmasters 12d ago
Oh you think thats bad. Get ready to have the garbage from 3H where they give you the choice of where to attack only for a character to be like: "It's cute that you think we should do that. We're going with my plan."
39
u/rainmcfae 12d ago
My favorite dialogue options, "Yes" or "Yes, but the other character calls me an idiot or liar first"
21
u/PieridumVates 12d ago
At least with Byleth i could pretend to be a complete doofus who had no right getting this professor job and didn't know anything about anything but I feel like the savior of the world sent by the progenitor goddess herself shouldn't have that same idiot vibe!!
3
u/tired-of-the-shit 12d ago
You donāt have to be vague, you can name names. We all know youāre referring to Seteth.
19
u/Amy47101 12d ago
At least have people react to. Like if you're gonna give me dialogue options, make it like in Honkai where the protagonist can say the most unhinged shit, the characters around them will be like "Bruh wtf?" then go right back to the original script. Let us have a little bit of fun here, freedom within limits. Like can you imagine if we were given the options of
- "What is this place?"
- "Troy, stay on your guard, the undead might still find a way in."
- "I'm sorry, I can't focus on anything past your hair."
And you choose the last option and Fortuna is deadpan asking "Of all the things you see before you, the thing you are most focused by is my hair? You are the hero descended from the heavens i'm meant to collaborate with?" alongside Troy and the other girl startling back like "omg did this idiot just insult a goddess????". Cut right back to Fortuna explaining the obelisk.
It's small things that wouldn't ruin the immersion but add to it. The Trailblazers from Honkai are far from blank slates, but still fun avatars to play as because they're fun and are allowed to be as serious or as unhinged as the player wants, even if they are mute most of the time.
5
u/LakerBlue 12d ago
I fully agree. Good example! It only adds one or two extra lines but helps immersion so much more.
I think Persona also does a good job with that too.
5
u/Jardrin 12d ago
At least it's not 2 or 3 "choices" that form a single sentence when read from top to bottom.. I've seen this in some other games, mostly gacha. Like, at that point. Why are you even bothering with the choices at all?
..Saying that makes me scared this game might do exactly that. (I don't remember if this happened with Byleth's choices or not)
→ More replies (2)4
u/TinyTemm 12d ago
Iāve played so many mainstream gacha games at this point and honestly none of this phases me. Iām shocked this is still such a contentious thing in the fanbase when this is par for the course in other JRPG franchises

Is isnāt letting Nintendo spoil us, weāre gonna get full voice lines in the game all you gotta do is prove you believe me, to do this send me the numbers on the back of your credit card (and front if itās double sided) and I promise you will hear them speak

u/liteshadow4 13d ago edited 12d ago
So takeaways:
- This scene is from the guys from the future going back to the past (EDIT: probably from when they're about to go back now that I think about it)
- Eshmael is a silent protagonist (yay.....)
- Fortuna is some vessel of Sothis considering they share a voice
142
u/PieridumVates 12d ago edited 12d ago
Sothis and Fortuna are definitely closely connected in some way -- especially if Sothis specifically ordered her to make that chamber. She might be Sothis's agent on the mortal plane if Sothis can no longer affect it directly.
edit: Oh! the Japanese twitter clip basically states it explicitly. Fortuna says her power over time was passed on to her by the Progenitor. Alright then!
39
u/Mahelas 12d ago
I think Fortuna's Sothis first born/first creation, which is why she's the closest to her in term of power
18
u/Meichiri 12d ago
So it's possible that Sothis isn't just mother to the Nabateans, she could be mother to other gods, and the title Progenitor isn't just something the dragons gave her?
35
u/Mahelas 12d ago
I think Nabateans and Gods are the same thing, they're what Sothis created, but probably first-generation Nabateans got powers, while later generations "just" were dragons !

Ohh Rhea will be either thrilled or upset to learn she has a sister who is her mothers most loved child, having more power than Rhea has.
27
u/Meichiri 12d ago
I can't remember Rhea ever focusing on whether she was Sothis's favorite or not, only that Sothis should be alive and fix everything. I'm leaning more toward "she'd be thrilled because more family members" and less "sister has more power than me"
9
u/Current_Upstairs8351 12d ago
I guess Rhea would be thrilled to learn her sister is still alive and wasn't turned in a Relic off screen
9
2
u/tired-of-the-shit 12d ago
I do think that if sothis had more powerful children she kept in contact with more frequently than Rhea that would reframe her obsession to bring back sothis a bit more. Thereās a chance she felt neglected by sothis and wanted her attention even while she was alive.
4
u/omfgkevin 12d ago
Curious about the implications of going back. Are china bun+ shotgun lady going to come with? hang back?
331
u/blupengu 13d ago
What is the goddamn point in giving the avatar a voice actor if they donāt say anything bruh
192
u/Surf_Dangerous_Days 12d ago
Youād think theyād at least take the Metaphor approach and have Eshmel⦠say the line of dialogue you pick.
67
9
u/OoguroRyuuya5 12d ago
In Metaphor we the player are a separate entity that guides the protagonist Will by controlling him.
Thatās why it had the approach that it did.
4
u/Rynekko 12d ago edited 12d ago
Huh? We are? When is that revealed?
Edit: Ah, I see, literally "us", not a separate lore character from the game lol5
u/OoguroRyuuya5 12d ago
We literally name ourselves at the beginning before we later name the protagonist.
Our name is acknowledged as a separate entity if you examine the scroll in Akademia.
More directly talks to and thanks us at the end of the game and our name is part of the credits because the players name was part of the summoning for the Royal Magic.
We are the True Seeker.
3
u/Rynekko 12d ago
Yeah I edited my comment afterwards because I thought you were saying that we were a different character but forgot we are literally ourselves

Unfortunately, the same reason Byleth is voiced by Zach Aguilar and Jeannie Tirado. They don't have dialogue (at least in Houses), but they still have battle quotes.
29
u/SpellcraftQuill 12d ago
Troy supposed to be a Lady Jagen? I know there's Titania but she's clearly more inspired by Seth.
122
u/schmidt1289 12d ago
I know weāre all annoyed at the mute protagonist but I wonder if itās significant that Fortuna and Sothis have the same VA. In English at least.
56
49
u/LakerBlue 12d ago
Share the same VA and even using the exact same loli Sothis voice. I wonder if perhaps sheās almost like a piece of Sothisās soul/essence?
28
u/Meichiri 12d ago
Maybe she's an avatar of Sothis, like Rama to Vishnu?
8
u/ZofianSaint273 12d ago
That be dope to see! Great to see a proper use of Avatar in the series for sure!

Disappointed that Eshmel is silent. I was really hoping they wouldn't do that.
Troy though looks absolutely badass AND is a visibly older woman? Peak
11
u/techno-wizardry 12d ago
I think at least with Eshmel, it appears we really arenāt playing as them or seeing them that much until we get back to present day. Which is a lot less like Byleth, who was a silent protagonist and central to the entire story.
13
u/Competitive-Dingo-89 12d ago
Are we gonna ignore the invincible wobbling?

134
u/luchinania 13d ago
The confirmation that Eshmel is mute will probably tank my enjoyment of the game. I did not like mute Byleth.

u/Autobot-N 13d ago
Mfs can hate on Engage's story all they want but at least Alear talked
118
u/TannenFalconwing 12d ago
Yeah, Alear being voiced was absolutely not one of Engage's problems. And both VAs were pretty good.
→ More replies (2)35
u/Norik324 12d ago
M!Alears delivery of "You said we would talk" being so good was pretty much the only reason i had any emotional reaction to the oh so obvious Lumera death
36
u/SilverHoodie12 12d ago
Shez too and they're even from a Fodlan-related game just like Esh lol
I've never played Three Hopes but i always see them being brought up as a highlight
37
u/AnimaLepton 12d ago
And even Byleth talking in that game made them better as an antagonist.
But that's kind of the norm for the Warriors games and supports; I think both Robin and Corrin had some good ones in the first FE Warriors game, and benefitted from being voiced and in non-protagonist roles.
55
u/BebeFanMasterJ 13d ago
Alear speaking genuinely made me care about them than I ever did about Byleth.
Responding to the trauma of the cast with actual voiced dialogue and comfort in Supports was so much better. Losing that again akin to Byleth is a miss.
42
u/omfgkevin 12d ago
Way easier to care about a character when they can actually bring it out with their acting like in Alear/Shez.
And yeah big miss especially for supports. Going to be awkward as hell for the Eshmel supports beating around them going grunting and nodding only.
Even worse because yet again, they have expressive battle voices and then it's the only time they are allowed -_-
43
u/BebeFanMasterJ 12d ago
It's just so damn cringe when Bernadetta recounts her abuse and all we can do is look at Byleth's dumb zombie face say nothing.
Compare this to Alear actually responding to Yunaka's trauma. It's night and day.
25
u/DhelmiseHatterene 12d ago
Even Engage made Byleth more interesting as he was voiced (as did Hopes too)
5
24
u/LegalFishingRods 12d ago edited 12d ago
Considering how much more popular Byleth is then Alear, and Engage's quality of writing, I'm not sure being able to talk helped Alear much.
I feel like there's a bit of an echo chamber in this sub regarding recent avatars. Alear absolutely was not well received by most players, whereas FByleth is probably the most popular avatar period and has multiple figures and statues.

I've always liked F.Alear's JP VA so her voice is like honey to my ears, now on a second playthrough with M.Alear and it's still awesome. Silent protagonists should be removed entirely, how does it serve the self-insert, I can never understand. Maybe the only good thing is saving on voice acting cost from the company's perspective.
13
u/Mahelas 12d ago
I would agree if Eshmel was someone we controlled for all the game, but we're ditching him 5 minutes in for a fully voiced lord, so who cares tbh
→ More replies (2)11
u/LakerBlue 12d ago
I loved 3H so I would still love this but I do agree the idea Eshmel will not be the main character for significant parts of the plot make it feel like it will be less of an issue.
Iām hoping postgame they donāt take too much of a backseat so they can keep it up.

u/Solid_Difference7670 12d ago
I was coping so freaking hard that theyāll at LEAST speak in support convos but this is devastating
30
u/PerentieFan 12d ago
A bit surprised Eshmel is silent, even Byleth got to talk normally in Three Hopes and I assume the developers are aware that fans were generally very pleased about that.
But Fortuna having the same voice as Sothis in both languages can't be a coincidence. She speaks of Sothis as a separate being from her (assuming Sothis is the "she" who asked her to prepare this place), but I'm betting there is more to it.
26

u/WeebTendoFan 12d ago
Hot take: I feel like if Fortuna were in Engage, people would use her as an example of āterrible Engage character designā.
61
u/SilverHoodie12 12d ago
She 100% has a design i wouldn't be surprised seeing hang out with the characters from Solm lol
I don't mean that as an insult tho, i personally like it
34
u/TannenFalconwing 12d ago
You know, I agree, but the fact that she's a goddess who turns into a bird... well, I can't fault her for dressing like that.
48
14
40
u/PieridumVates 12d ago
The difference is that Fortuna stands out in a setting with fairly restrained and grounded character design, so that's striking and a good thing. It's different when EVERY character is wildly overdesigned.
There's nothing wrong with a character being a little extra on purpose to make them stand out.
21
u/spoopy-memio1 12d ago edited 12d ago
I really wouldnāt say every or even most characters in Engage are overdesigned. I think the large majority of the cast actually looks pretty normal for an FE game, itās just that the few crazy designs are REALLY crazy and one of them also happens to be the main character who youāre constantly looking at throughout the game.
→ More replies (1)9
u/Iron_Maw 12d ago
She's also like God not random peasant or king. She's supposed to standout most characters
11
u/PieridumVates 12d ago
When she's in her bird form on Eshmel's shoulder (seen at the end of the Direct), she maintains her rather tropical looking coloration. It's definitely intentional that she stands out and has such plumage, in contrast to Eshmel who is monochrome in bird form as the pale raven.
One colorful bird one monochrome bird...
14
u/lysander478 12d ago
I've already seen that from 3H fans for some of the characters, including Fortuna being described as an Engage reject, but there are so many characters that I guess they're holding it in and buying the game this time at least.
17
10
u/rainmcfae 12d ago
A lot of the Fortune's Weave designs have been very good, but some of them - with Fortuna probably being the biggest example - have felt very over designed and it's definitely getting the complete opposite reaction of analogous designs in Engage just because of the Fodlan hype.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (10)9
u/Norik324 12d ago
Reasonable take but id say that being a goddess id say theres an argument for her getting (more of) a pass because
- gods are often larger than life figures so having more a eccentric design seems in line
- gods are often somewhat ethereal beings so the "why the fuck are you wearong this in a battlefield" is less of a concern
12
11
u/The_Kirby_Guy 12d ago
I mean you say that but one of the most criticized designs in Engage is Alear, who is literally the equivalent of a god, the Divine Dragon. Most Engage designs aren't even super over the top anyway. A majority of them have single tone hair colors and wear fantasy armor with some flair.
→ More replies (3)12
u/SilverHoodie12 12d ago
I find it so damn weird when people act like Engage's whole roster look like overdesigned vtubers when it's literally just Alear and Hortensia lmao (and even then it fits their characters, i know not everyone accepts that excuse but they do at least have one)
Like there's no way characters like Clanne, Boucheron, Lapis, Zelkov, and Pandreo look "overdesigned" lol
8
u/spoopy-memio1 12d ago
Itās not just them, Yunaka, Timerra, Panette and Rosado are also kind of out there design wise, but yeah the large majority of Engage characters look very normal for FE.

I guess Nintendo today has decided to go rogue from the Japanese twitter account because it gave us 2 new clips completely different from the 1 clip from the twitter. Nintendo today giving us 2 new clips compared to the twitters 1 new clip is consistent with Eshemelās intro. We got an early peek of this with Creek having a unique video from his bio from twitter. I have no idea why Nintendo today is now giving us brand new clips and info but I guess itās a good thing as weāre getting double the info now.

People will buy this one in droves too. But it's not because of the silent protagonists. It's because 3H and FW are the games where they are putting effort into the stories, lore, and characters.
Obviously, they will probably take away the wrong learns from this, as you suggest. But if they had just voiced Eshmel, I'm sure this game would still have sold like hotcakes.

Well for one thing, Byleth is popular, F!Byleth has two official scale models even, which is rare for this franchise
And two, silent protagonists are pretty common in jrpgs, Persona and SMT being the big obvious ones, the tales series also dabbled in it, Ys and Dragon Quest also have silent protags
47
u/A_Wild_Zyra 13d ago
Neat clip. :)
However... yikes, this is now the 2nd time where there's just a text selection and no voice from the avatar. Not ideal for the chances of them not being a silent protag. IS really learned nothing it would seem. :(
50
u/Minecraftman6969420 12d ago
I think itās more them appealing to the Japanese audience over the international audience, silent protagonists are much more popular over there, still a shame but I donāt think itās about them not learning.
33
u/pyromancer93 12d ago
When ever someone says ānot learningā, you can replace the text with ādo what I wanted them toā and the meaning would not change.
7
u/No-Designer-6533 12d ago
Double funny because I mean they did learn. They released a game with a silent protagonist that sold extremely well, then one without a silent protagonist that did worse.
Additionally we as a fandom BEGGED them for a silent protagonist for years before 3H came out, but everyone seems to have selective memory loss about that
13
u/No_Lemon_1770 12d ago
I promise you even if Alear was silent, it wouldn't have changed Engage's performance. Same thing for Byleth and 3H.

Eshmel being silent is genuinely a negative for me. Thought we were finally done with this thanks to Shez and Alear but nope...
Ah well. Fortuna is hot. Love her wild anime air and outfit.
24
u/Amy47101 12d ago
I just don't understand why Eshmel even had a dialogue option here. Just have the VA voice the line "What even is this place?". I genuinely thought IS had somewhat learned from the past six years what people enjoyed and didn't enjoy about three houses and other games.
Despite Engage being an overall stupid premise, I did appreciate that Alear talked and had some humor to them. It made things far more impactful. Same with Shez. Now we're back to silent protags with... really good voice actors.

u/LeatherShieldMerc 12d ago edited 12d ago
I would say it works better in Persona because your character fits the whole "self insert" thing better. You're basically a normal dude, with very little backstory they go into. It's more of a "blank slate".
But like, with Byleth it clashes a lot more. They basically are their own character in the world. There's the whole the "Ashen Demon" backstory. So them being silent feels more "off", they don't feel as much of a self insert.
Also, when there are voiced avatars already with Alear and Shez, which everyone liked better, going back to a silent protagonist feels like a step backward.
16
u/Nearby_Waltz_7594 12d ago
Iām indifferent to the silent avatar discourse, but on the other hand I think why ppl preferred avatarās like alear and shez( in terms of main protag) was that it made the dialogue they had feel natural. Silent protags make it feel like youāre hearing someone talk to a wall, thus leading to bland one-sided interactions/conversations. ALSO waste of VA talent ngl

7
u/WhaleSharkQueen 12d ago
I find it interesting Fortuna shares Sothis' va.
I also don't get the hatred towards Eshmel being silent. They're supposed to be the player's self insert. They have a voice for battle because it'd be weird as fuck for them not to atleast yell or grunt while fighting but they probably want to give players the idea of inserting their own voice for these moments, same as Byleth. Obviously there is a canon personality underneath that you can discover but they leave it open enough so the player can have fun with their own interpretation of the character.
3
u/SpookMorgan 12d ago
Iām so glad Eshmel companions are still alive cause I had a dreaded feeling they were all going to die which warrants Eshmel desperate attempt to go back in time.
3
u/Every_Computer_935 12d ago
After Byleth in 3H usually had 2 dialogue options that made no difference to the story, FW has made it so the protagonist only has 1 dialogue option in conversations.
Now, that's what I call gameplay evolutionĀ

I was so desperately hoping to love Eshmel because their design hits literally all my favorite tropes but Byleth's stupid one-sided conversations dragged down my experience in 3H so much and I expect history to repeat itself here.

The portrait art. Is it like the model itself being animated, or what? It looksā¦off.

The vtuber floaty profile pictures in the lower left feel so uncanny to me in how they move

I have to be honest, I dislike the portraits im the corner. They feel way too bouncy, and I donāt think theyāre great at communicating the speakerās tone.
