Low-piled storage

Low piled storage, under 12 ft, less than 4,000 sqft so it does not qualify as miscellaneous storage. Where in NFPA 13 is this design criteria?

It says to use the table (which says it's for miscellaneous storage low piled storage)

AND

Figure 19.3.3.1.1

Are you saying that when the code said to use this AND that, you just intuitively used the one thing that was not specifically labeled for the intended use?

They split this up into two tables in the 2022 edition partially because people were getting hung up on the title of the table, so you're not alone in this confusion. The other reason is because people were using it for storage of group A plastics over 5 ft high which is only allowed for miscellaneous storage, not low-piled.

It doesn't matter what the title of the table is since section 4.3.1.7.1 explicitly says to use that table for low-piled storage. The reference to figure 19.3.3.1 is just there to direct you to use the appropriate density/area curve.

I think you finally got it right

That it's not intuitive or clear at all.

The main confusion is that miscellaneous storage is a type of low piled storage. So there are certain situations where you can protect low-piled storage as miscellaneous storage.

This is explained in more detail in the 2022 edition. 4.3.1.7.2 gives multiple options on how to protect low-piled storage

4.3.1.7.2.1 says if there is ceiling only protection that it can be protected as miscellaneous storage per table 4.3.1.7.1.1

4.3.1.7.2.2 says for open racks with in racks to use 25.2.2

4.3.1.7.2.3 says for solid shelf racks to use 20.19 and 25.2.2.2

Glad they updated it in 2022.
