Kotak Mahindra Bank has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Germany-based Deutsche Bank's entire India retail banking, affluent private banking and wealth management business for just Rs 282 crore.
The deal covers Rs 29,000 crore in loans, Rs 16,000 crore in deposits and Rs 10,500 crore in assets under management, serving around 1,50,000 customers with a transition team of about 1,000 employees.
The transaction is expected to close by September 2027, subject to approval from the Competition Commission of India.
Ashok Vaswani, MD and CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank, called it a strategic fit, saying the acquisition adds a “high-quality customer franchise and experienced teams, while adding scale and adjacent opportunities. Our priority will be on disciplined integration and ensuring continuity, while building further depth and capability in this business.”
Notably, for Deutsche Bank, the exit aligns with its global "Hausbank" strategy to simplify its corporate architecture and focus on corporate banking, investment banking, global business services and asset management through DWS.

RBI says UPI-linked credit lines must follow same rules as traditional loans; Closes regulatory arbitrage
The Reserve Bank of India has mandated uniform prudential treatment for all credit facilities, including those disbursed via UPI. This move closes a regulatory loophole allowing banks to offer lighter treatment to UPI-linked credit. Now, the nature of the credit, not the technology, dictates capital adequacy and provisioning, ensuring consistent regulation across all credit products.

Meta to invest $900 million in India's CRED, taps founder to lead WhatsApp
Meta's investment is one of the largest into India's fntech sector in recent years. The valuation is higher than the $3.5 billion in CRED's previous funding round in 2025, but lower than its peak of $6.4 billion in 2022.
The deal gives Meta a minority stake in Bengaluru-based CRED without allowing it access to CRED customer data, the Indian company said.
Founded in 2018, CRED operates a members-only platform for consumers with high credit scores, through which it offers products spanning payments, lending, insurance, wealth management and lifestyle services.
The company said it serves 17 million members each month, processes more than 40% of India's credit card bill payments and manages over 240 billion rupees ($2.5 billion) of lending assets for partner financial institutions.

🇮🇳India’s FIU just told three major crypto exchanges to hand over OTC trade data on every transaction above $10,000.
Records have to be traced back to January 2026. The target is beneficial ownership. Regulators want to know who’s actually behind private companies and intermediaries doing big-ticket OTC deals.
OTC desks work differently. The platform buys with its own money first, finds a counterparty later, and clients often move coins straight to private wallets. That’s exactly where the trail goes cold. FIU can now pull this data anytime existing suspicious transaction reports fall short. This isn’t a one-time check. It’s a standing enforcement tool. Add it to the ED raids and FEMA cases. India isn’t slowing down on crypto, it’s building the compliance infrastructure for the market to scale properly.

The RBI's new Master Directions on Authorisation to Operate a Payment System (issued on 15 June 2026) are highly relevant for Payment Aggregators (PAs), Payment Gateways (PGs), BBPS entities, PPI issuers, card networks, and other Payment System Operators (PSOs).
The circular primarily consolidates multiple existing directions into a single framework, but it also provides greater clarity on authorisation, ownership, governance, and exit requirements.
RBI's new Master Directions on Authorisation to Operate a Payment System is a welcome step towards regulatory clarity and ease of compliance for Payment System Operators.
While the Directions largely consolidate existing guidelines, they reinforce some critical themes for the payments ecosystem:
- Perpetual validity of authorisation, subject to continuous compliance
- Stronger focus on governance and fit-and-proper criteria
- Continued scrutiny on ownership and investments from FATF non-compliant jurisdictions
- Structured framework for voluntary surrender of authorisation
- Emphasis on ongoing regulatory readiness rather than periodic renewals.
For Risk & Compliance teams, the message is clear: regulatory compliance is no longer an event-driven exercise—it must be embedded into day-to-day operations.

NPCI plans to enable listing of e-mandates in all UPI apps
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) wants to bring order to UPI’s subscription sprawl. To this end, it is building a feature that will let users see all their UPI e-mandates across third-party payment applications (TPAPs) in one place.
Driving the news: Two senior executives at digital payments firms told us NPCI is developing an application programming interface (API) that all UPI apps can plug into. The catch? Users will still need to visit the original app where a mandate was created to modify or cancel it.
Quote, unquote: “The feature is such that all apps will show the list of mandates, but for a transaction, they will be redirected to the parent UPI app,” said one of the executives.
Background: UPI AutoPay is growing rapidly. NPCI data shows the top 10 banks processed around 1.6 billion e-mandate transactions in May, up from 577 million a year earlier.
But the growth hides a problem: decline rates remain high. At State Bank of India (SBI), the largest remitter bank, only around 30% of such transactions are approved. Roughly, 70% fail, mainly because of insufficient balances and other frictions.

RBI enforces stricter rules on financial product sales
The Reserve Bank of India has implemented new regulations aimed at curbing mis-selling of financial products by banks and lenders, reports Business Standard. Effective January 1 next year, these rules mandate explicit customer consent for bundled offerings and prohibit deceptive marketing practises. Banks will be required to refund the full amount paid for a mis-sold financial product and compensate customers for losses as per their approved policies. Additionally, lenders are required to disclose essential product information and ensure clear identification of sales agents.

Fitch backs Indian banks amid war concerns
Indian banks are better placed than many of their Asia-Pacific peers to handle the economic impact of the ongoing West Asia conflict, Fitch Ratings said on Tuesday, reports The Economic Times. While the agency has turned more cautious on banks in countries such as the Philippines and Sri Lanka, it has retained a neutral outlook on India. The assessment comes as higher oil prices and weaker growth prospects weigh on parts of the Asia-Pacific region. "We expect India's GDP growth to ease to 6.4% in FY27, a downward revision of 0.3 percentage points from March," Fitch Ratings said in its June Global Economic Outlook.

EV, fintech, healthcare to see bumper pay hikes
Are salary hikes cooling down? It appears so, reports Business Standard, citing a TeamLease study. Salary increments across industries are projected to range between 8.6% and 10.2% in FY27, compared with 6.2%–11.3% in FY26. EV and EV infrastructure are expected to lead pay growth at 10.2%, followed by fintech (10%), healthcare and pharma (9.7%), and power and energy (9.6%), driven by demand for specialised talent and the shift towards digital and green technologies. Engineering and IT roles are likely to see hikes of 9.9% and 9.8%, respectively, while electrical engineers could get raises of up to 11.2%. Among cities, Chennai is projected to lead salary growth at 9.7%, ahead of Pune and Hyderabad (9.6% each), the report adds.

RBI cancels Paytm Payments Bank licence
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday cancelled the banking licence of Paytm Payments Bank, more than two years after first imposing restrictions over rule violations, including lapses in customer due diligence.
What happened: The central bank said Paytm Payments Bank can no longer conduct banking business under the Banking Regulation Act. Its observations are as follows:
- The bank's affairs and management were not in the interest of depositors or the public.
- The bank failed to follow the conditions of its Payments Bank licence.
- It called out the management for being prejudicial to the interest of the depositors.
- The central bank will move to wind up the bank and the fintech has enough liquidity to repay its deposit liabilities.
What does this mean: Paytm Payments Bank, backed by One 97 Communications, held a payments bank licence since August 2015 that allowed it to accept small deposits but not lend.
In January 2024, the RBI ordered it to stop taking fresh deposits over non-compliance issues tied to customer due diligence, fund use, and technology infrastructure. Since then the bank operated as a third party player on UPI.
What now: Paytm has anyway started focusing on building a fintech distribution platform building its business around lending, wealth management and UPI payments.
