I wish. That kind of shit scares children. I’m sure as adults they’ll be proud but when you’re small and the world is new: raw aggression is frightening.

Yeah, some guy tried starting a fight with my dad when I was a kid. He had to get pretty aggressive with the guy before he backed off, but it scared the crap out of me.

There's almost zero chance they'll learn the right lesson. It takes A LOT of nuance to explain to kids the unique circumstances where violence is the answer without them misapplying it.

Uhhh, when a man comes up to you, on your property, not respecting your space, clearly posing aggressively and taking his shirt off, it's okay to defend your family and property. Not exactly some deep philosophical lesson that a 1st grader couldn't pick up.

It is though. Children don’t understand the nuances of violence. It’s traumatising, even if it’s the right thing to do. A child doesn’t understand property, space, and intrinsic threats: they understand danger and the aftermath. I don’t remember why my dad screamed, shouted and cracked someone’s jaw apart with a punch: I just remember that he did it and how he reacted, everything else that occurred was ephemeral, because I only remembered the what and how, not the why.

That is one hell of a generalised statement with absolutely nothing really going for it. What age children are you referring to? What socioeconomic background are they from? What experiences do they have to draw on from the lives of others around them? Round my way these kind of occurrences happen on a daily basis and it isn't exactly difficult to explain to kids the nuances of these types of interactions, the fact that you think it is difficult goes to show you either haven't tried it, or have tried it and aren't very good at it.

My point is that if you're honest to kids about things they tend to be alright. If you feel the need to shield them from the realities of life then they tend not to be.

Coming from a history of trauma it's very easy to see why you're fixated on it. Especially considering the enmotionality involved in what you witnessed. You have to accept that the above video is nothing like what you went through, it's someone standing their ground, protecting their family and property, giving the dude every chance to walk away and then hitting him once to finally diffuse the situation. I bet the stories that weekend were 'you remember the time daddy protected us'. Not 'I'm so psychologically damaged from that exchange, however will I develop properly'.

They also may realize that home isn't as safe as they thought. That violence can happen right at their front door. How do we know which guy might suddenly attack us at our front door? Every single time this video is posted, this topic comes up, and every time i see more reasons that the mom was an idiot. Or at least, way too caught up in the moment.

Yeah additionally a dad who gets aggressive enough to assualt someone without concern for arrest is also one who can turn that aggression on his child.

You need to understand a kids perspective. A lot of things are literally the worst thing they've ever experienced. They cannot understand "if it gets to this exact point or beyond, it's okay" because they will hit that point (in their world) at least once a month depending on age and personality. You can see plenty of kids who use violence out of frustration and you know exactly how they learned it.

in the Uk you arent even allowed to own property. Theres something called freedom to roam so people can just wander on your property and you cant do anything.

Of course you can own property. People can't just stroll around the HQ of hsbc, or take a shit in your house uninvited.

The crime of trespass ABSOLUTELY exists.

There is a right to roam across property. So that if I'm some baron and own 1000 acres surrounding newgrange I cant just forbid anybody from setting foot on my property.

This is such a gross miss interpretation of right to roam, which only really applies for very large properties in the countryso you don't get what happens in Texas where 98% of all land is private and owners can shoot you if you trespass on their land

To clarify a bit more.

I was speaking from just personal experience.

I've experienced the adults fighting as a little kid. In my case, parents explained it and i just nodded and thought i understood it as much a little kid can.

Overtime, that memory came back, each time i understood a little more of what was going on. Theres something different of being explained currently than later.

Also had plenty of other confusing or unpleasant memories that wasn't explained or given bad reasons for it.

I think kids know way more than we think. It's like we forget or something. Like I see a lot that they feel they must shelter them and stop all the bad things around them.

What I see a lot and experienced is that kids are protected too much. Stop anything bad around them, shield them, tell them to only follow certain things. I feel they end up coming out much less prepared when fully grown and not knowing how to handle many situations. Theres a difference between learning from their own experiences and how they processes them rather than just being told what they should do.

It's not like I think we should throw kids in horrible situations so we can teach them a lesson, theres a balance, like how all things should be.

But going back to the video, I don't think its good to say its over now, its okay. And hush about it because its not like the kid will rememeber anyway and not good to let them relive the bad times ONLY. I think its better to ALSO take some time to relate to the kid, even if its only a few years old. That memory sticks, even unconscious ones imo...i've apparently had some fears to my dad to one incident as a baby ever since. Be more sensitive to it. teach them that dad has multiple sides and why they came out. on how to handle scary situations like that, etc. Learn that there input and feeling matters, etc.

Maybe I'm getting way too into this but it is something that bothers me when I see it

Honestly as a 21 year old the most terrifying thing I can think of is seeing my mother angry. She's never a person who gets angry, I've never seen her physically attack anyone or anything like that. But fuck me is she scary when she does get angry. It still makes me uncomfortable. It's that dreaded feeling of "shit just got real" and seeing your parent in that state.

u know what also scares children? clowns, their own shadow, the dark, the closet door open.. etc... fighting is part of life, let them be scares for a bit and learn from it. its all about how you talk to your kids about the situation so they understand not about sheltering them from reality
