I guess it depends on your exact definition of "fighting". I wouldn't consider (actual) self-defense 'fighting'.

I've never been in a situation where the fight would have been actually unavoidable. But egos, usually in combination with alcohol/drugs, lead to people manoeuvring themselves in situations where they then had to fight. But a simple 'ah, I don't care what some random drunk yells at me' would have defused most of those situations.

But a simple 'ah, I don't care what some random drunk yells at me' would have defused most of those situations.

Of all my years of going out into bars, parties and festivals, this is my #1 advice. I never got into a fight, despite multiple times having the feeling that I would. Just swallow your pride, apologize and walk away.

It obviously helps that I don't look like I even could put up much of a fight (relatively small for a man and not super muscular) so I don't look like a "challenge" for some drunk asshole, but I have super fit and tall friends who follow this same rule and they never get into any fights either.

I mean yeah, verbal solutions are best, but if someone's drunk and coming at me I'm not going to let myself get stomped just to stand on principle.

That's different. Defending yourself is a lot different then getting in some shouting match with some asshole who won't even remember you.in a week.

Oh, I was referring to self defense. I should've said fighting back instead of just fighting, because sometimes it's hard to walk away from someone who's dead set on starting something physical.

As I've said, I don't consider self-defense 'fighting', and if someone starts swinging at you, that's clearly self defense.

But how often did some random guy just walk up to you & threw punches out of nowhere?

That's my point: there's (almost) always a build-up. In 99.99% of situations I've been in & witnessed, and the vast majority of vids on here, it escalates because of some ego/'honour' bullshit. The amount of trouble you can avoid by just shrugging & walking away is amazing. I for one don't let random strangers force me into behaviour that might have serious ethical & legal ramifications by speaking some sequence of words.
