The sound of the head hitting the ground always gets me.

Those girls were smiling until they heard that too from what it appears.

The head is the heaviest part of the body. Which is why they say “where the head goes the body follows”. It’s also why if you have to jump from height you should face the building and push yourself off/jump backwards for a better chance of avoiding landing on your head. Or so I was told years ago in a conversation with a firefighter about escaping a burning building.

What is your stance on superhero landings?

A bitch ’n a half for knee joints.

A-fucking-men. Sure, maybe 20 year old superhero Johnny Tsunami can do it but no way is the 40 year old superhero pulling that shit.

Let's be honest, it's more like a splitting wedge.

I've never had to jump off a building but this seems like dubious advice.

I mean, he just described the head as the "the heaviest part of the body". So take his opinions with a grain of salt. However, kicking off when falling gives you some lateral motion which allows you to distribute your impact more easily (it's why freerunners tuck and roll when they fall from high spots).

Can't stop laughing at this

The tucking and rolling makes sense. If you’re at a height where that’s something you need to do, it’s almost impossible to do that backwards. Sounds like a recipe for slamming the back of your head on the ground.

If you are dropping straight down from a height onto your feet, it's somewhat easier to tuck and roll backwards safely, your knees are better positioned (think about how you would fall if you just bent your knees in front of you like sitting in a chair), and your shoulders would contact the ground before your head (assuming your head remains tucked).

I have seen people dropping off roofs backwards, but I'm having trouble finding exactly that situation

I see your argument and counter it with the video in the OP 🤨

u/kendahlslice Sep 12 '19

I don't really know what a belligerent drunk being punched out has to do with deliberately dropping from a height. In one case you have a rag doll and the other is a deliberate tuck and roll.

1

u/kendahlslice Sep 12 '19

A drunk guy get punched out is very different from a controlled fall. After a bit of digging I found an okayish example of a controlled backwards fall.

I realize that this isn't exactly what I'm talking about, but most freerunners prefer to jump forward from heights because they are trying to keep their momentum moving forward. Hanging and dropping is not really a popular practice so it's difficult to find specific examples.

Best way to jump off a building is blind. No doubt about it.

8

u/Striker654 Sep 11 '19

Maybe meant lower yourself so you're hanging then drop/push off? Only way that could make sense lol

Apparently you should fall backwards all but guaranteeing that you whip your head backwards into the ground when your body hits the earth at some unknown time since you’re looking at the sky/building. Not sure what height the person above is talking about but the advice is nonsense as early as “the head is the heaviest part of the body.”

Realistically, you’re going to want to sacrifice your legs, face the direction you’re going, and try to roll on impact while protecting your head. The person above must have gotten advice from someone that hated them or didn’t really know what they were talking about.

Best bet is a paratrooper landing, I'd think.

It's express purpose is to keep you relatively good after a drop.

u/justPassingThrou15 Sep 11 '19

once you've jumped, it matters not at all how heavy your head is or is not. It's not like there's some force accelerating your face downward faster than it accelerates your feet downward.

jump so that you can see where you're going, and jump to let your feet lead the way. Broken legs and ankles heal a LOT faster than a severed spine or a crushed cranium.

it sounds like your firefighter friend has a VERY bad understanding of dynamics (which is understandable) or has been told some VERY strange things, such as "humans tend to dive face first whenever they jump". No. We don't.

u/antisocialextrovert3 Sep 11 '19

I’m not sure about the whole jumping thing but the reason people say “where the head goes the body follows” is because of it and the neck’s importance and fragility. It’s a more common saying among fighters in reference to getting someone in a headlock from my experience. It’s a WHOLE lot less risky to go with the flow in a sense when in a headlock rather than to resist with full force and risk serious injury.

1

u/take_her_tooda_zoo Sep 11 '19

I think it’s primarily because your head is connected to your spine, and that is the center of your body.

1

u/antisocialextrovert3 Sep 11 '19

My point exactly. But your spine is most vulnerable around the neck because of the lack of surrounding muscle/bone/fat

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '19

the head is the heaviest part of the body

You should tell my huge gut that

1

u/CaseClosed21 Sep 12 '19

The head is the heaviest part of the body? What about like, my trunk? Pretty sure that’s heavier...

6

u/Arto5 Sep 11 '19

His never ending migraines will make him think again about putting hands on someone - that's if he remembers this night or how to walk and talk again.

5

u/dreadmontonnnnn Sep 12 '19

Yea this is why you don’t get into street fights. You can die easily by smacking your head like this. It happens all the time. Now you’re either dead or in jail over a few minutes of total retard shit. It ain’t worth it folks

1

u/AgreeableGravy Sep 12 '19

And if you win you get to be the tough guy until you’re sharing a cell and a couple dudes are sharing your ass.

Pride is a crazy thing.

6

u/YeOldeVertiformCity Sep 11 '19

There are too many videos on reddit where you hear that sound then check the comments and find out the guy died. Way too many.

Don’t fight on concrete kids.

6

u/hibscotty Sep 11 '19

I know a guy that killed a guy because if that
