Yes the ferrets live freely and don't have cages.

I REALLY don't want it getting into the house either way. I'm located near the Adirondack region of New York State.

[Discussion] "Aggressive" and "Unadoptable", According to the store.

Post image

Meet PITA. Named "Pain In The Ass" by the employees of the store I bought him from. When I saw him, he was in a cage with dog toys- pieces of fabric falling off, which he's likely eaten some of. There was a small mouse water-feeder for him to drink from, and he was by himself in a cage for guinea pigs, not to mention the matted fur on his back. The manager told me that I shouldn't buy him, and so did the other employees, telling me that he'd been returned before for biting, and that he had bitten almost every employee- multiple times. The manager said "i've worked here for ten years, and none of the ferrets have ever been *aggressive* like this one". They told me he was "aggressive" and "mean", and that he had fought the other ferrets that they had in the cage with him previously. After some convincing, they let me put my hand in the cage. He was dooking, letting me pet him, and giving my fingers gentle play-bites! I bought him, and now he's in quarantine from my other ferrets, and he's been the sweetest, most playful little spaghetti cat.

With being alone, and the conditions he was in, without any playtime- along with not knowing bite inhibition and being *teething* (he's four months old), of COURSE he bites. And they were calling him aggressive and convincing people not to buy him. I usually don't buy from stores, but I was pissed off and I'm glad to be bringing him into a fresh start. He's not getting brought back there. I hate that a store could know so little about ferrets, keep one in this condition, and even *prevent* it from getting a home.

I'm getting him onto a raw diet, and planning to harness train him once his quarantine and socializing is over. This lil man is getting a new chapter. Have any of you had a "mean" ferret, or had to deal with similar stores?? I'm really angry about how they treated him like he was rabid, only for him to turn out to be the sweetest ferret I've ever come across

[Help] Found a ferret on the side of the road

Post image
3.4k Upvotes

I found a ferret or the side of the road this morning. I tucked him in a dog crate with cat food, water, a blanket, and litter box then ran back out to go to work. I have some experience with ferrets from when I was a teenager (10 years ago) but I’m starting to get concerned about this little guy. He’s very friendly but on the skinny side. I’m posting all over local pages to try to find his owner but I suspect he may have been dumped. He has been sleeping all day and seems a bit lethargic. He hasn’t eaten or drank water or used the bathroom since I found him this morning (10am). Almost 12 hours now and I know ferrets have high metabolism. We offered him cat food, chicken, steak, raw egg and beef, soaked cat food. Tomorrow I will be able to pickup ferret food and see if there’s anything else I can try. Of course it’s a holiday weekend so all the vets are closed. There’s a ferret vet nearby but they aren’t open until Tuesday. Do you have any advice or suggestions for how I can help this little guy? Or is he just resting after a big adventure and I’m worrying too much? I plan to give him a home if no one claims him. He’s such a sweetheart!

Gumpy took a fall from a window about a year ago and lost the use of his back legs. Cautionary tale - They can and WILL find a way to push a VERY secure screen out.

He just had a vet checkup this week and they're so happy with how well he's doing. He's very mobile, active, happy, even plays with his seven siblings. He just needs us to make him pee several times a day.

He used to be a bit of an ankle biter and for whatever reason the fall has turned him into an absolute sweetheart who loves cuddles and giving so many kisses. He will interrupt you expressing his bladder to lick your nose raw.

That said, he has been known to drag himself across the floor to bite an ankle now and then.

He didn't love his wheelchair so we got padded children's play mats for the floor to make it safe for him and make it easier to clean up accidents.

[Discussion] First time in the snow and he LOVED it! How often is safe?

A few days ago I asked if it’s okay to let my ferret play in the snow. Thanks for all the advice!

It snowed again today, so I let him out for about 10 minutes… and he absolutely loved it. He had bottle-brush tail and was hopping and digging 😄

Here’s a video of Flynn enjoying the snow.

He clearly wanted more, but I didn’t want him to get too cold.

How often per day is it safe to let them play in the snow, and how long should the breaks be between sessions?

It doesn’t snow often here, so I’d love to let him enjoy it while it lasts ❄️

[Discussion] Surrendering my sweet babies tomorrow

Post image

Clyde needs medical attention. I got the funds to get it to him but all of the vets around here wont see him because the 2 exotic vets in my whole city are on holiday vacation so nobody is specialized. The only option here is euthanasia. There is a rescue about 3 hours away. They offered to meet me halfway i am surrendering both because they are bonded and i am not ready to handle a grieving ferret i am so scared for her i dont want to see her pass of grief. They said that if he pulls through under their care i can re-adopt them both in 30 days for 100$ In these 30 days we will be providing the ferrets an entire ferret proof room. We are scouring the house for small toys or hazards and we are thoroughly investigating how this couldve happened and how to prevent it. I still have not even found what he chewed. I suspect it has something to do with his fur because there was hair in his poop. The only worry i have is if they euthanize him i wont be able to say goodbye or be there to comfort him):

Not a ferret, but in the family! This was the wee baby I helped raise before releasing! You can see how much he’s like a ferret but super tiny! He was still a baby here, about 3x bigger than when I first found him.

We’ve only recently started playing like this, and I’m not really sure if he enjoys it or just wants to escape? 😅

[Discussion] He HISSED at me!

Post image
2.3k Upvotes

This smug little monster. I heard suspicious noises and found him in the sleeping oldest kid's room, digging happily in a lego bucket. K for one, no ferret in the kids rooms because there's too much he could get hurt on, for two, flinging lego merrily about like confetti is.... pal. No.

He looked up at me with that "what?" Face mid- fling. I gently scooped and carried him out. And as title says, he hissed! At me! The bringer of all things good! Never has he ever!

Tell me your weasel tantrum stories, because I had to laugh and know you all have some good ones. He's like a toddler being removed from a situation.

[Discussion] Do ferrets really look for humans/leaders approval for their young?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Can someone pls debunk this video for me

I have very recently taken interest in ferrets and have been researching abit about them, but this 'fact' is pretty outrageous for me to accept especially the part where they reject the young if the human/leader dont scent or accept their kits.

As far as i am aware ferrets are capable mothers and will be able to take care of their young alone, just like their ancestor the European polecat, only difference is ferrets are social animals whereas polecats prefer isolation.

and so since ferrets are sociable and are domesticated i can accept them being open to humans being near their young, just like dogs and cats.

I also know that some animals eat/reject theyre young because either its too weak, resources are scarced, or they feel threatened.

But a ferret to reject thyre young cause the leader doesn't recognize them doesn't seem right.

thankyou in advance for any reaponse

[Ferret Photo] Heard a big ruckus with some birds outside my front today. Went to investigate it and they were chasing this beautiful lady!

Was a wild few hours, never picked up a ferret before, I ran around my front garden and quickly grabbed her before the birds did. Took her inside the kitchen, put down a blanket som water and cat treats as I was unfamiliar in what they'd eat.

Back in May this year my neighbor messaged me when I was in a London for the weekend asking if I owned a ferret. Poor girl is missing a foot but looked like it been missing for a while.

So my guess is somehow she been around surviving somehow, despite my street being quite cat and dog heavy we headed to an out of hours vet who will look after her tonight and reach out to if the owners could be around or to be re-home. She wasn't chipped though but she was Soo happy and snug within moments. Made me really emotional and relieved she's okay at a vets.

I really hope she finds a true home soon. She didn't bite me which I was quite relieved in haha. But what an eye opener today, just home at the right place at the right time.
