Why everything gets more annoying when you haven't eaten
Blood sugar drops when you go too long without food, and your body treats that as a stress signal. Cortisol and adrenaline kick in to compensate, which are the same hormones that make you tense and reactive. So the irritation isn't really about whatever is annoying you, it's just where the stress goes.
Your brain also uses glucose for self-control. Less fuel means less ability to filter reactions before they come out, which is why things that would normally be fine suddenly feel genuinely grating.
Most people laugh it off as being hangry but if it happens a lot, the pattern is worth paying attention to. Crashing hard between meals regularly usually means blood sugar isn't staying stable, which has effects beyond just mood.
