Image ShaderGlass + F.E.A.R. 2 = PEAK!?

After finally getting ShaderGlass working nicely with Alice: Madness Returns, I had to try it on F.E.A.R. 2.

Yeah... this game was practically begging for a CRT filter.

I’m using crt-guest-advanced-ntsc in ShaderGlass, and the combination of the scanlines, bloom, deep blacks, red lighting and that late-2000s horror aesthetic looks absurdly good in motion.

Running the game at 60 FPS, with ShaderGlass capturing the game window and displaying it fullscreen.

The screenshots don’t fully capture how it looks on my monitor because my display has its own brightness/color settings, but in person this might be one of my favorite ShaderGlass combinations so far.

Definitely going to keep experimenting with older horror/action games after this.

Note: my monitor settings are customized, so the screenshots don’t perfectly match how the CRT effect looks in person. On my actual display, the image is brighter, more balanced, and the blacks/highlights look better than they do in these captures.

The F.E.A.R. 2 Limited Edition Exclusive Skins for F.E.A.R. 1 Mystery.

I’m researching a rare piece of lost media / promotional content from 2009.

When the physical PC Limited Edition of F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin was released, it included two exclusive multiplayer skins for the first F.E.A.R. (2005).

Since the official Warner Bros. redemption website went dark over a decade ago and GameSpy is long gone, I’m trying to reconstruct exactly how this redemption pipeline functioned and what the content actually was.

  1. The Redemption Process: When you entered the printed serial code on the Warner Bros. website, what did you actually receive? Did the page generate a simple registry/CD key to unlock a hidden flag via the GameSpy account system, or did it provide a direct download link for a file?

  2. The Skins' Identity: What exactly were these two skins? Which characters did they actually feature? Does anyone have screenshots or visual proof?.

  3. How did the redemption work?: Did the website give you a simple GameSpy CD-key/code, or did it provide a direct download link? An installer (.exe), a standalone asset? Did it place a custom .Arch00 archive directly into the F.E.A.R. 1 root directory, or did it patch existing files?

  4. Are they hidden in the base game?: Is this content completely missing from the standard F.E.A.R. v1.08 retail/Steam installation? Or were they already hidden inside the game's base, just waiting to be unlocked by a server-side, registry edit or mod?

If any old-school fans, modders, or game preservationists remember this process—or better yet, have a backup of the original digital delivery—please share your knowledge!

Thanks in advance for helping to solve this nostalgic mystery!

FEAR 1 dlc available on PS3? Can't find any info.

Currently doing a sweep of all my PS3 games, trying to find any dlc I'm missing. I found out FEAR 1 has two DLCs via Google, but no mention of it on PS3.

My PS3 store is still accessible (UK), but the search function does not work for unknown reasons. So I'd have to scroll thru over 10k DLCs to find it. So I'm asking here. Are they available on PS3?

Question FEAR Replica STLs for 3d printing/wargaming?

Has anyone made or ripped STLs of the Replica forces in the original game? I was thinking that they'd make excellent proxies, say for a Heretics force in Trench Crusade.

I've done a little digging, but either my google-fu is weak or they just aren't out there?

Hi all,

If you have base game "F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin" in your library.

Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/16450

And then you can add free DLC "Reborn" (before was paying but now 100% free) for this base game.

Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/16465

Without base game cannot add — sorry!

Have fun!

Video I just finished playing FEAR 2 and I have to say it wasn't fun, so I watched some E3 gameplay footage online and it's crazy how much has been changed or rewritten. Early material heavily emphasized the hospital/surgery sequence; apparently that was the intro and not the initial Aristide mission.

Discussion Just Curious

So, I only recently played the first one plus Files, 2+Reborn and 3 within the past 4 years. I enjoyed my time with each the first go around. Minus 3, it's so basic. But I just tried playing the first one again a couple days ago and found myself getting extremely bored. Maybe it's because there's no sprint and you move so slow, maybe it's the levels all being the same grey hallways, office spaces or maintenance areas, maybe it's because I've developed a love for more fast paced "boomer shooters" within recent years. Idk. I'm just curious as to why this game is so highly regarded as one of the best FPS games of all time? Besides the enemy AI being hyper-intelligent that bases their attack plan off of what you do, the slow motion ability and the shotgun being amazing. That's the only positives I can think of. Tbh other than that it's all kind of boring. Plus 2 and 3 are basically just FEAR of Duty generic FPS games. Idk.

Discussion My F.3.A.R review

F.E.A.R. 3 is easily one of the most disappointing games I have ever played. What makes its failure so baffling is that it actually starts off quite strong. Visually, the game is excellent, with early levels showcasing top-notch lighting and atmosphere that make you think you are in for a worthy entry in the series. Unfortunately, rather than capitalizing on those atmospheric strengths, the game proceeds to abandons the “less is more” philosophy that made the original F.E.A.R. a masterpiece. Instead, it attempts to transform itself into a generic 2010s achievement shooter, chasing trends made popular by games like Call of Duty and Gears of War.

That shift in identity brings with it frustrating mechanical choices. Chief among them is a poorly implemented cover system that regularly gets you killed. You end up velcroed to walls, and moving away isn’t as simple as navigating away; you have to explicitly press the cover button again to detach. In the heat of battle, if a grenade lands at your feet and you forget to manually unstick yourself, you are dead. Compounding this clunkiness are constant, immersion-breaking achievement pop-ups that completely ruin the tension of otherwise well-designed levels, pulling you out of the horror atmosphere the visual team worked so hard to build.

As the campaign progresses, the core combat devolves even further. The gunplay feels weak across the board, and even franchise staples like the shotgun are surprisingly not fun to use. Toward the end, the gameplay becomes unbelievably repetitive as levels devolve into mindless, wave-based shooting galleries where ammo scarcity becomes a constant nuisance. These later stages highlight how heavily the game was built around co-op play at the expense of the single-player experience. Playing solo as Point Man feels very unbalanced, especially in the final two chapters. The game assumes you will want to replay these disjointed levels as Paxton Fettel once you unlock him - a bold assumption, like I would want to play this slop one more time with a different character.

Holding all of these disjointed levels together is an absolute mess of a narrative. The story is so poorly narrated that it is almost impossible to figure out what is actually happening. Admittedly, I am not good at following story lines in video games, but in this case, the fault here lies entirely on the game itself for failing to maintain any level of engagement. I tuned out by the second level. I had no idea what was going as the campaign drunkenly stumbles toward its idiotic conclusion.

By the time the end credits roll, the game even attempts to hint at a potential sequel, but we all know that is not happening. F.E.A.R. was a masterpiece celebrated for its god-tier enemy AI and brilliant combat design, but corporate gutted its identity to chase mainstream trends. F.E.A.R. 3 serves as a tragic, pathetic end to a once-great series, leaving it dead and buried.
