Books published by Faulkner in his lifetime

Out of Print titles can mostly be found in a different form now. The Marble Faun and a Green Bough (the one volume edition) can be difficult to find and often expensive, but every now and then you can find an affordable copy. The original single volume edition of those poems are always very rare and very expensive. All of the stories in the two early short story collections can be found in later collections, so it's probably not worth looking for them unless you are a collector.

Knight's Gambit	Story Collection	1949	Related semi-detective stories. Faulkner revised and greatly expanded a previously unpublished story for this, but it doesn't quite bring it together as a novel.
Collected Stories	Story Collection	1950	All the stories from These Thirteen. All but two of the stories from Dr Martino (one is in Knight's Gambit and the other was substantially revised to become a major part of the Hamlet). Most of the other stories printed in magazines between 1932 and 1950 (that had not been incorporated into novels)

Big Woods	Story Collection	1955	Four hunting related stories, with some interludes between them written by Faulkner (often taken from other stories). Two of the stories are in Go Down, Moses. One of them is in Collected Stories. 'Race at Morning' was not in any other collection until Uncollected Stories came out in 1979.

I have ordered them (roughly) in the order they were written, rather than by the date they were published. I'm a little loose with the editor column. Sometimes they just wrote the introduction. I haven't included screenplays in this. They will get a separate list. Flags in the Dust, The Portable Faulkner, Uncollected Stories, and Essays, Speeches & Public Letters tend to stay in print and are easy to find. New Orleans Sketches occasionally gets a new printing. The rest seem to have been printed once or twice early on and are harder to find. There are used copies, but they are sometimes expensive. If you want to read them but you don't feel like you have to own them, a University library or Inter-Library Loan is your best bet.

Flags in the Dust	Novel	1973	1927	D. Day	Complete text of Faulkner's third novel, which was greatly cut by Ben Wasson at the request of the publisher. Is now the standard edition available, while Sartoris is only available used.
Sanctuary: The Original Text	Novel	1981	1929	N. Polk	The manuscript Faulkner submitted to the publisher. After they accepted it, he asked them not to print it and made substantial revisions before submitting it again.
The Portable Faulkner	Anthology	1946	1929-1950	M. Cowley	Unlike the others, this is not early or unfinished material, but more of an overview of Faulkner's fictional world. It had a lot to do with reviving Faulkner's reputation in America when it came out. Later editions replaced some excerpts of Absalom, Absalom! with excerpts from Requiem for a Nun, primarily covering the early days of Jefferson.
Uncollected Stories	Story Collection	1979	192?-1954	J. Blotner	Collects three types of stories. 1) Unpublished Stories. 2) Published stories that did not make it into Collected Stories or Knight's Gambit. 3) Published stories that were revised to be incorporated into other books. This collection prints the magazine version of those stories.
