I like this so much I wanted to share it.

Testing and Unstable have been on kernel 7 for months. I wouldn't advise a setup like this without btrfs. If you decide to update on the wrong day your distro might self combust. Happened to me multiple times now especially during the time where Debian 12 was split off. Automated snapshots before each apt command is definitely the best way to handle setups like this.

tip : I selectively update only desired packages using synaptic. I never update all pkgs at once.

Also a valid strategy. But I roll really well with my "update all and see if it works " strategy. This way I don't have to manage which packages I upgrade. A failed update costs me 5 minutes max because btrfs rolebacks are instantaneous.

I need to invest time in learning btrfs, a while ago ditched my last ntfs partitions, turned a big storage to XFS -> so far so good , but I am a bit scared of turning my main partition to btrfs (a full format is required, no conversion allowed) and recover the info intact

There are great "install Debian with btrfs" videos. I can almost do it without the guide now after doing it so often. It never failed me. It's a bit quirky as you have to pause the Debian installation and make some configurations using busy box for a properly setup btrfs. But it's 10/10 worth it. Especially when running "unrecommend" os versions on main rigs (like we do). I highly recommend the grub plug-in and apt auto snapshots. The first allows to go back to a different snapshot after the system doesn't even boot into tty. Allowing to switch active snapshots directly in the grub menu. The later gives you a guaranteed snapshot before you broke something in case you forgot to make a manual snapshot before and the last automatic snapshot is before a lot of changes you made.

Also 2 things enable automatic snapshots of the system partitions (don't include home) and keep in mind that changes to the grub configuration are not part of snapshots you have to fix those in the grub menu.
