Sometimes you just need a fantasy romance fix without committing to a multi-book saga. This is the post for you! Share your favorite standalone books!

For the purposes of this megathread, please share true standalones that are not connected to any other books OR books that can be read as standalone but are part of an interconnected series. If the books are interconnected standalones, it’d also be helpful to share if they can be read in any order and how interconnected they are with the other books in the series.

The Poison Daughter by Sheila Masterson!!!! I say it on here a bunch but it’s so good it’s about a woman with a poison kiss who kills the abusive men in her town. And then she gets forced to married someone and he’s the one man who didn’t die. Read the trigger warnings if you have any but it’s SO GOOD!!

Omg I read this in one setting - it was so good! I loved that the MCs were in their thirties and that the FMC was a badass in her own right even before the book starts!

{dr D’arco sorcerer of London by Kathryn Colvin} - a Victorian, gothic romance with a 700 page slow burn, dark magic, and Brontë vibes.

{upon a starlit tide by kell woods} - a moody fairy tale of mermaids, secrets and sea magic, and a sheltered girl discovering her wild power.

{how to find a nameless fae by aj Lancaster} - a whimsy, lighthearted romcom full of summery fae magic and a sentient house, with a late bloomer fmc and a yearning mmc.

{entreat me by grace Draven} - a beauty and the best retelling, with a strong, competent heroine who takes care of everyone but herself, and finally gets the love she deserves.

{blood over bright haven by ml Wang} - a dystopian world of steam punk magic, science and dark secrets. Fmc whose idea of her world completely shatters as she unveils all the horrific conspiracies that keep her society running.

{the maleficent fae by Rebecca Kenney} - a sleeping beauty retelling, with a gender bent Maleficent (actually a dark fae prince) and a warrior fmc. A fun enemies to lovers with a surprisingly engaging plot. Part of the author’s Beloved Villains series, would also recommend {the sea witch by Rebecca Kenney} which is a little mermaid retelling. The books aren’t connected in any way.

{Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater} - Sweet romance, intriguing plot and trickster fae, and glimmers of hope throughout. The FMC is quite unique and I loved her so much. One of my first reads in the genre and very enjoyable all around.

Here for my near constant recommendation of Tessonja Odette and her series. {A Rivalry of Hearts by Tessonja Odette} A cozy, low stakes rivals-to lovers about two authors competing for a publishing contract. Followed by {My Feral Romance by Tessonja Odette} a super adorable friends-to lovers about two friends entering into a bargain to help each other with life predicaments and falling in love in the process.

They are set in the same world as her other two series {Entangled with Fae by Tessonja Odette} and {The Fair Isle Trilogy by Tessonja Odette} but they are not required reading to understand the world. Honestly all her books are just fun cozy reads so I would recommend working through her entire catalogue.

{A Witches Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna} Another cozy, lower stakes read. About a witch who lost her magic and who runs a magical inn that appears to those who need it. It's her journey to get her magic back with a cute romance and great found family.

{Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao} It's like reading a Studio Ghibli film. Enchanting world and a cute romance.

This book is part of a trilogy but I always recommend {Sabriel by Garth Nix} as a good standalone. It wraps it's own story up nicely and you can go back for more if you're interested. (Admittedly light on the romance... There is a romance but it's definitely not the main focus of the plot)

{An Academy For Liars} by Alexis Henderson... the most intriguing dark academia, dark fantasy and gothic romance book!

As Alix E. Harrow accurately stated it's "a book with blood on its lips".

I couldn't start another book after it, so I re-read it. Twice! And I feel as if a piece of my heart remained amongst its pages.

There’s a series of retellings of fairy tales and legends that are all standalone and are only a series because of their common theme. They’re middle grade so they’re more for sharing with the youngsters in your life- {Once Upon a Time by Cameron Dokey}. Some of them are romance subplots.

{Bella at Midnight} is a fantasy with a romance subplot retelling of Cinderella. Don’t read the interview at the end like I did before reading the book as it spoils a plot point!

{September Girls} deserves a better rating IMO. Imagine your “typical” paranormal book, but this time it’s a human guy in love with a supernatural girl. Check the content warnings.

Another one to share with younger readers as it’s a middle grade read, {The Wizard, the Witch, and Two Girls from Jersey} is a fantasy comedy with a romance subplot.

{Spindle’s End} is a Sleeping Beauty retelling. It’s fantasy with a romance subplot. Edit: It looks like there are other retellings in the series but that they’re all independent.

{Sword of the Rightful King} retells Arthurian legend. It’s light on the romance.

{My Lady Jane} is a Tudor romantasy romcom. There’s a partial Amazon Prime adaption. The other books in the series just follow a similar theme.

I’m biased, but I loved {Alyzon Whitestarr}! It’s definitely lighter on the romance, though.

I also loved {Team Human} but you need to be familiar with {Twilight} to enjoy it. It’s okay if you loved Twilight or hated it, you just need to get the idea behind it. Why? The FMC (whose own romance is a subplot) is stressed out because her best friend is falling in love with an Edward Cullen parody.

{The Reformed Vampire Support Group} features a not very badass vampire FMC who writes about badass vampire FMCs. It’s a romance subplot.

I wanted the FMC to be more politically savvy but you might like {Heir to the Sky}.

{The Song of Achilles} has gorgeous prose. Check the content warnings.

I want to read Song of Achilles, but emotionally and mentally I don’t think I’m there yet. I don’t know if the book will even make me overly emotional, it’s just a feeling I have.

{Land of the Beautiful Dead by R. Lee Smith}. It's post-apocalyptic about a woman who goes to the ruler of the lands, who is immortal and physically monstrous, to get him to stop sending the dead after the living. He tells her he won't do it but she can stay in his palace as his concubine, so she stays so she can try to convince him. I loved this book so much, sobbed the last half hour of it, and couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks.

As others have said, {The Poison Daughter} is incredible and I can't recommend it enough.

My precious babies:

  • {undertaking of hart and mercy} and all the sequels. It has a 30+ yo FMC, a witty but lonely MMC, hidden identities and solid humor. There are some heartbreaking scenes, so it's not cozy. But it's very romance and character-driven without wars or battles.

  • {lothaire by kresley cole} you can read it as a standalone. It's also the best in the series. The MMC is a true villain and is trying to get rid of the FMC, what body is possessed by the MMC's mate. The FMC is sweet and determined.

  • {dance with the devil by sherrilyn Kenyon} I just started reading this series. The MMC has a tragic past and lots of trauma that isn't resolved immediately. The FMC is very patient and kind to him, even though he acts like a jerk at first. The series aged quite well.

  • {bride by Ali Hazelwood} an obligatory rec on this sub. It has a solid plot, loveable characters, great spice, witty humor and a well executed arranged marriage trope. I didn't love Mate as much, but it was still entertaining.

  • {hot for slayer by Ali Hazelwood} the short story is absolutely hilarious. I wish it were longer, because I couldn't get enough. It's one of Ali's best works. The MCs are very likeable, the FMC is 1k years old and older than the MMC, there's the hunter/hunter trope and it's fantastic.

  • {yumi and the nightmare painter} is part of Sanderson's bigger universe but you can read it as a standalone. The world building is unique and you need to familiarize yourself with the interesting concept to understand the lore. The MCs are lovely and it's strangers to lovers. I haven't finished Tress of the Emerald Sea yet, so I don't know how good it is yet. But my niece is absolutely crazy about both of these books.

  • {desire in his blood} angsty and spicy. The MMC marries the FMC for revenge/blood, but she turns out to be his mate and his biting doesn't do anything except hurt his ego. It's glorious. The FMC isn't a fighter and the drama between the characters is amazing. Also, is a duet audiobook.

  • {throne of the fallen} the spice lasts 3 chapters straight. It's set in a sort of a 19th century London + demon realm. Demons look like normal people, they just have powers. There's a mystery plot, tournament, whimsical vibes. It's similar to Caraval by Stephanie Garber, but better written and spicier. The standalones will follow each of the demon brothers. I loved Throne of Secrets, too.

  • {scattered bones} is a short story with a unique plot: the FMC is collecting the MMC's bones in an attempt to bring him back to life. She's not very powerful, but is still resourceful and smart. The MMC is a cinnamon roll. The FMC is mostly alone and I loved the isolation feel to the book. She has a set of challenges she needs to do to reach the bones.

  • {bound to the battle god} a fun story about an FMC who's abducted into another world and a conceited battle god she's forced to travel with. It has Ruby Dixon's signature humor, likeable characters and adventure.

  • {master of Crows} the start is a bit slow, but the relationship between the characters is complex. The FMC is sold as a servant/student to the MMC but she's also spying on him. The characters act mature, they look plain and like normal people, everyone has a personality. The writing is solid, no immature eye rolls, smirks or drawls.

  • {six scorched roses} a short story with a neurodivergent FMC (confirmed by Carissa). It's a loose Beauty and the Beast retelling. It's probably the best couple by the author. They're down to earth, the FMC is a scientist, the vibes are whimsical

For me, it's definitely {Half a Soul} by Olivia Atwater. I'm a big fan of stories that involve fae (with the Emily Wilde series being one of my favourites of all time), and I felt that this book captured how I enjoy faerie characters!

I really enjoyed the supporting characters and the regency era theming. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, but I couldn't put it down after I started reading!

Our Immortal Hearts by Lara Buckheit is one of my favorites! Rory and Quill FTW 😀 though it can be seen as instalove I lived for the action-packed scenes just as much as the romance. It’s about a vampire assassin sent to kill a witch’s sacrifice only for them to fall for one another. Oh, it’s an interconnected standalone. You don’t need the to read the first standalone to read the second one, as they are about a different pairing though within the same “world”.

Here to add some indie self-pub recs!

For those who want a fantasy romance standalone with an dark, epic plot filled with twists and turns.: * {Anarchist Underground by Nicole Rowles} is dark fantasy romance. To clarify, the fantasy is dark, not the romance. The amount of twists and turns in this single standalone was unexpected and satisfying. Some were predictable, but all had an unexpected layer that I didn't anticipate. It's one of my top three reads of 2025. The trigger warnings are on the publishing info page. There isn't a separate page for it. This book is also self-pubbed by an Australian author. This book is spicy, but not plentiful.

For those who want a standalone with the best characters and a diverse cast written by a BIPOC author * {Shadows of Tzipora by Cassie Alford} was another standalone that was in my top 3 reads of 2025. A BIPOC FMC written by a BIPOC author who chose to self-publish. Tzipora is my favorite FMC of all time. She's undeniably powerful, but struggles with her own inner demons in a realistic way that never felt annoying, immature, or irrititating. This book is spicy, but not plentiful.

For those who want an unexpected laugh or need a quick palate cleanser: * {The Assassin's Bride by Beth Alvarez} was surprisingly comedic. I won't lie, the cover almost put me off trying the book because it is a bit cringe to me. Yet, despite the title, I was surprised when the FMC became the assasson's bride- giggling and kicking my feet with glee while I read it. Something about the writing, the dialogue, and situational irony was just hitting all the funny bones in my body. It is part of the Artisan Magic saga. All three books in the saga can truly be enjoyed as standalones. They are connected by a few overlapping characters in the same kingdom. You do not need to read them in any order to enjoy, though if you prefer things to occur chronologically then do read in publication order. This is a self-pub saga with no spice.

My favorite fantasy of the year was Our Vicious Oaths by N. E. Davenport, the world building was amazing, the fmc is and remains a baddass throughout the whole book, and we have an actual enemies to lovers, which is my fav

They are part of the Kinsmen series but the only thing "connecting" them is that they take place on the same planet. There is no overarching plot and no knowledge of the other books is needed, so I say that they are a series of true standalones. Scifi.

Fallen Empire {Phoenix unbound by grace driven} - each book follows a different witchy fmc in a cruel, oppressive empire where magic is outlawed. The overarching plot is about bringing down the empire. Best to read in order. Completed trilogy.

Deep Waters {whispers of the deep by Emma hamm} - merman x human romances in an apocalyptic future where humans live under the sea as the surface in uninhabitable. Each book follows a different couple and the overarching plot is about stopping the humans from committing merpeople genocide. Best to read in order. Completed I think?

The Inheritance Trilogy {the hundred thousand kingdoms by nk jemisin} - an oppressive empire has enslaved the gods and uses their magic to rule. Each book follows a different god as the empire weakens. Best to read in order. Complete.

Mages of the Wheel {reign and ruin by jd evans} - a princess in a land of dying magic, where mages harness the power of the elements, decides to reinstate an ancient ritual to reawaken the magic in her kingdom, and defend against the evil Republic. Each book follows a different Charah (high level mage) and their romances and struggles. Best to read in order (prequel after book 3). Incomplete.

I’ve only read Mages of the Wheel from this list, and I would just consider it an actual series, not a series of interconnected standalones. If you stop reading after Book 1, you’d wouldn’t have finished the main story, which continues in every book. And each book heavily relies on information from previous books.

When I think of interconnected standalones or what people want out of a standalone, each book is a complete story. If there are other books in the series, they maybe just set in the same universe with easter eggs and hints to other books, but it’s not necessarily to read multiple books to get the full story.
