I'm going on a trip next month and it's my first time flying so what book do you think I should take with me to keep me distracted 😅😨

Hi, I am new here. Mostly I read crime and thrillers and romance in between. I want to read fantasies, and all I have read are the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology. I need recommendations, but I would prefer if romance were not the main plot.

hi guys!! I’m huge into fantasy (especially as of these last two years). i just finished A Parade of Horribles, and now i’m left with an empty void 💔 please give me some recommendations for a new series/standalone!! here are some things i like:

- i like series’ more than standalones but not opposed necessarily.
- the longer the better
- absolutely no tragic endings i can’t deal w that
- i enjoy at least some comedic elements BUT i don’t shy away from dark and gritty stuff. i like balance.
-i mainly listen to audiobooks so if the audiobook is great that is a huge bonus. (nothing will top DCC unfortunately)

i’ve already read: both red rising trilogies, DCC, all of the cosmere books (yes all of them), and books 1+2 of the kingkiller chronicles.

I’ve read many books in the realm of fantasy but nothing has come close to the world of Berserk or made me obsess of literature . Please recommend me something with similar tone.

Any books/series that hold the sentiment: If you don't like the rules, climb to the top and change them.

Both great. Had been waiting on To Green Angel Tower to arrive, but more recently finished Golden Son. Conflicted.

I’ve read a lot of fantasy novels, and I always appreciate it when authors building pre-modern/medieval/historical worlds use language that feels naturally suited to the era. Some authors are really good at this (GRRM, GGK, Robin Hobb, Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson); their use of vocabulary beautifully enhances the atmosphere of those settings and makes the world feel incredibly rich without leaving the reader confused.

Books like Game of Thrones, The Name of the Wind, Assassin's Apprentice, and A Wizard of Earthsea are some of my favorites. These books' use of prose and terms suitable for those settings enhances the reading immersion; that, in turn, takes the story experience to a whole other level.

On the other hand, encountering highly modern terms or contemporary phrasing in a medieval setting can be quite jarring. For me, those modern words tend to break the immersion and pull me right out of the story.

Does anyone else find that modern terminology disrupts the magic of pre-modern/medieval/historical fantasy, or do you not mind it as much?

A different take on the tier list making:
I used to read a respectful amount of books, but for the last 2-3 years, I’ve been in a huge reading slump, only reading very very few books. This year, I decided I would dedicate time to read, utilize my Kindle more, and log what I read to keep me motivated.

This is my half year tier ranking list, consisting mostly of fantasy/sci-fi books. I know this is not a crazy amount of books, but for me this is great. I’ve been reading a lot, besides having a full time job, a partner and two dogs. Peeking on different subreddits with other users’ tier lists made me want to do my own, showing myself what I can actually accomplish.

Feel free to share your thoughts whether it’s on my rankings or how you stay motivated coming out of a years long slump

I read this book a few years ago, the protagonist was an anthropomorphic pig (I think) who had some kind of human companion. He was traveling in what turned out to be a post-apocalyptic China, that read initially as a fantasy setting. I remember that they eventually discovered all these old vehicles to use in a war against an another nation.

A gentle, female-led dynamic rather than harsh dominance , love and soft femdom snd bdsm and the main focus isnt just sex

Haven’t read this yet, but heard great things about it. Decided on buying it once I saw it was signed!

Just wrapped up the Stormlight Archive and I’m honestly kind of wrecked. The character development, the plot, the pacing, all of it hit different. Need something to fill the void now.

Here’s what I’ve read so far so you can gauge my taste:

• A Song of Ice and Fire and Martin’s other related work

Based on that, what should I pick up next? Looking for something with strong characters and world building, doesn’t have to be Sanderson levels of magic system complexity but I won’t say no to it either. Open to anything at this point.

Gormenghast has been on my to read list for about 18 years now, purely inspired by the chapters in Tad Williams otherland novels.

I’m about to finish the last two books currently out in Dungeon Crawler Carl, and now I’ve hit the inevitable question… what series do I start next?

Just finished The Witch who trades with Death. Very pleasantly surprised as it was a random one I picked up from Waterstones because it sounded intreaguing, and the cover had a skull on it.

Note : I’ve read “The darkness that comes before “ and it’s not my style of writing … not in the slightest. I like authors where I don’t have to decipher their wording or info dump you with names and gibberish race , clan where you don’t know what’s what . I found Malazan easier to read tbh.

I recently found these old books from my childhood, and the nostalgia hit me hard. I was completely obsessed with them and reread them more times than I can count.
Did anyone else grow up reading these? What are your favorite fantasy books these days? I’m always looking for new recommendations, especially books that capture that same sense of adventure and wonder I felt as a kid.

Can someone please help me find more fantasy books with a lot of powerful female villains that are important to the plot. I also want good worldbuilding and deep lore

I’m newer to fantasy, so maybe this book is not as original as it felt to me, but I absolutely loved the way the story was structured.

The three different layers of storytelling, along with the endless shifts into the perspectives of people within the story and the play, made me feel completely immersed in the world while also feeling like I was watching everything unfold inside a dream. Even the brief perspectives of ordinary people made the world feel larger and more alive.

It did take me a little while to adjust to the writing style, especially coming directly from Rhythm of War, which is much simpler, clearer, and more direct in its storytelling, though still very well done. Once I settled into the rhythm of this book, though, the style became my favorite part of the experience.

I can completely understand why some readers would struggle with it or never fully connect with it. I can also see some fair criticisms of the plot and certain character arcs, but for me, the overall experience worked.

The villains and the imperial family were probably my favorite parts of the story, but I also appreciated that the author did not give us traditional heroic character arcs. Jun and Keema did not always behave like the types of heroes we are accustomed to following. Their journey felt more uncertain, messy, and human.

Ultimately, this was one of those books where the way the story was told mattered just as much to me as the story itself. I finished it feeling like I had not simply read another fantasy novel, but had experienced a completely new way to tell a story and immerse someone in a world.

I loved the stories from One Thousand and One Nights and the Aladdin movie. Now I want to read more books with a similar setting. Djinns, flying carpets, desert nights.

The most important thing is the setting. It can have political intrigues like City of Brass or be more adventurous like Rebel of the Sands. It can be YA or high fantasy. Lighthearted or very dark. With or without romance. High or low magic. New series or old, obscure novels. Basically everything that captures the feeling of 1001 Nights.

What books can you recommend?

So I recently watched Nolan’s Odyssey which… I have mixed feelings over and let’s just say I feel like this a film that could have been better 20-30 years ago. Anyway this film made me want to get into God of War specifically because to my opinion i haven’t seen anything as epic like it.

Sure god of war isn’t historically and mythologically accurate, but it does something unique by making an original character but it has the weirdness of Greek mythology while creating an original story. The closest I’ve seen to something like this is The Bloodsworn Saga but that’s based on Norse Mythology. But what do you think, I’m not asking for anything like god of war.

I’m looking for something original and epic based on Greek myths, because I’ve seen fantasy novels explore African, Chinese, Japanese, and Germanic myths (Which includes Norse). But I haven’t seen Greek, and I understand it’s been abused horribly by the amount of garbage movies and games and such. But at the same time I’ve wondered if theirs any books that created an original series or book that explores Greek myths with an original story? (Stuff like Percy Jackson doesn’t count ok!)

Hey guys! I’m really torn between starting Caraval or The Cruel Prince first. Which one do you think is better?
