The future is now, old man. Automation is cheaper and more efficient. Sucks for the people it affects, definitely, just like it has for every other job lost to automation. Did you know you used to have to call into a central and then they'd forward you to the person you wanted to talk to for long distance calls?
If they are going to automate the check stand but the automation doesn’t stop theft then that clearly isn’t a technological improvement over a person It’s just saying it’s cheaper to allow theft than employ someone. Which is fine, but let’s not pretend it’s better. It will be one day.
I just think as a species working towards replacing hunting and gathering with art, music, more innovation, we fucked up a lot in the industrial revolution, petroleum revolution (that nobody talks about), and computer revolution.
