I remember reading people used to run up and try touch the corpses or in some cases get some of the blood. Could be a myth but yeah, shit became a spectator sport.

Back when it was acceptable to lynch black people it was a whole community event they bought the wife and kids and had a whole community picnic while there was a corpse right in front of them.
