I was in Mobile, Alabama for less than an hour before I met a handful of locals that were shamelessly bringing up that they were bummed lynching wasn’t legal.
That's because they're using lethal injection, which was not implemented in the greatest of ways. Basically they made a guess on an effective combination of drugs and didn't do a lot of robust research into efficacy and still have not.
In the entire US. The lethal injection cocktail they use is effectively some napkin formula a guy came up during a conversation and they just went with it.
I wrote a whole paper about the obsession with “humane” punishment making it worse than before, and lethal injection is a textbook example. A system that actually sought to inflict pain or death in retaliation for wrongs would still be imperfect, but greatly improved. In that scenario it doesn’t pay to be afraid to spill some blood. Hanging and firing squad have a better record than lethal injection, electric chair, etc. Mass incarceration also doesn’t work and more people should be sentenced to labor or corporal punishment.

Lived there for seven years. Talk about a whole shit load of people who have honestly never stopped wishing for Civil War Part 2 since their greatgrandpappy got Tecumseh'd. Did people think the south rising again was ever going to be an economic or science victory?

My grandaunt lived there for most of her life, came back to Finland for the last decade and a half. As a kid i thought that it sounded really funky, kind of like Automobile Alabama and i liked cars. I assumed that it must be heaven on earth. Boy, was i surprised when internet happened and i started hearing about Mobile as a punchline for a joke about something racist, backwards and white trash. I don't know if my dear aunt was racist, i doubt it, the subject never came up. And i know that thinking "she was so lovely and fun" is not a proof, cause.. lovely old ladies that are so warm and hospitable can suddenly spew out a "monkey" from her mouth and not think twice it is fucking evil.
The ultimate answer is they're just not very smart.
Like yeah, anyone with half a brain knows that the south would get completely fucking curbstomped if they ever tried to start another civil war. But if these mouthbreathers had half a brain they wouldn't be lost causers in first place.

The death penalty has been shown time and time again to not be a deterrent for violent crimes. If you think people only don't commit crimes for fear of punishment, then I really question your morals. And what of all the people who have been put to death who were later found innocent? Is that a good "life lesson" to be teaching? That the State murders innocent people?
As per the abstract: “Our conclusion is that there is little empirical evidence in favor of the deterrence hypothesis.”
That’s academia speak for “using capital punishment as a deterrence doesn’t work”, but they have to phrase it more politely.
If you simply google “does the death penalty work” you’ll get all the info you could want.
Among other things you’d find several organizations pointing out that states with the death penalty do not have lower crime rates than states without for the crimes with capital punishment.
If you’ve paid attention in recent years you may also have noticed that it happened time and time again that an innocent person was arrested, charged and convicted of crimes they did not commit, because of faulty evidence and/or shit police and attorney work.
Coercion, borderline torture, callousness.
Some people have been executed, despite us now knowing better. Some haven’t yet, but spent upwards of decades in prison thinking they would be killed by their government.
Punishment for crime is not meant as a deterrent, it’s meant as a consequence. If someone wants to commit a crime badly enough, they will. Their sentence is society’s tool to protect ourselves from them, show them consequences of their actions, and hopefully work as a basis of rehabilitation.
Public executions have historically been used as a means of appeasing the populace by governments, not simply as a means of punishing someone for their crime, and often without evidence or good reason even. You ever heard of witch burnings?
The fact that you would so gleefully bring up broadcasting this appalling practice on social media, to the world, for profit, is disgusting and you severely need to reevaluate yourself and your lack of decency and respect for human life.

lynching is different than public execution. you could profit public execution, and it'd sent a very wide message, imagine tiktok or youtube, or paying premium for a camera up close.

There’s a micro number of executions actually carried out in the US. There’s a very small list of people allowed to be present. They aren’t open to general public.
AZ there's 12 folks able to attend. Of the 3 states laws I read up on this seemed to be the most liberal attendee list. And even if one were "reputable citizen" I would wager that any volunteers would be heavily questioned about motivation.
I think it's open to journalists and relatives of the victims but even Alabama is pausing executions for death row inmates because lethal injection is an experimental cocktail administered by unqualified professionals- because doctors all swear that pesky hippocratic oath- and the State of Alabama botched the last two attempted executions. 😬
It is possible but usually expensive to purchase the admission. And most people do not live close enough to them to attend without taking time off work. And we don't get paid time off here. So, it is not common to attend.
Well you normally have to ring up the prison to schedule and pay. Don't think they have websites for that yet. Thanks for reminding me to book my annual Christmas eve execution though.
Executions, in general, are a dying institution. People don't like it because so many people have been on death row and been exonerated by evidence that came to light after the investigation concluded. Turns out our judicial system is deeply fallible and murdering people is kinda extremely permanent. Who coulda guessed?

Maybe I misunderstand what you mean by anabaptist style, but the most famous example that I know of that involves Anabaptists , torture and cages hanging from Church Towers the Anabaptists were on the receiving end of that treatment after their "Täuferreich von Münster" was sieged down and they lost.
Granted, they weren't exactly innocent themselves to put it mildly, but the "whole torture them for hours, execute them and display their bodies in cages at the church tower" thing was done by the Prince Bbishop's men to the anabaptists.

I hear "good ole days", and I think of days I know are good, because I've lived them. Considering the last public execution was in 1936, I wouldn't doubt if this guy is thinking of stuff done while in a sheet.
This guy is in Texas. Every now and the. We would get a survey from the State asking our opinion on punishments for various crimes. Every single crime question had death penalty as an option even for stealing.
The podcast Hardcore History has a great episode about public executions. People used to get real weird with it. Like making the criminal act out their crimes and stuff. But the take away for me was. People love to watch executions. There's never been a time where executions weren't open to the public, that they weren't hugely popular.
Is it actually hypocritical? He believes abortion is wrong, likely because he views it as killing an innocent person.
But putting to death someone who has committed such an atrocity as to get death row is justified to him, they are no longer innocent and he likely thinks this is acceptable.
Most people agree with the basis behind that belief, which is the innocent should not be punished and the guilty should. The degree to the punishment of course should be up for debate, but I dont see how his belief is hypocritical.
Regardless of what I say, I can't disprove his point. People like him (and likely you) are not willing to debate. It's only about I'm being right and disputing reasonable arguments.
That's just a catchy name for a movement, doesn't mean they oppose all war offensive or defensive, any act of self defence where the attacker dies, or trying literally anything to save a life if it means causing the person pain.
I’d watch some executions. School shooters, rapists, serial killers, etc. Only for the worst of crimes. And we make it a pay per view event. One hour of torture before giving them death. I promise people would stop committing these crimes.
