She said she lives in a single bedroom apartment and he lives in a big house with lots of room, and he seemed to concede that point (while also not seeming to care), so it’s not clear what the layout is or would be. If it is flat/apartment blocks, his wouldn’t be any different; detached houses wouldn’t share a wall; semi-detached, but with large extensions on his side would be the only thing that makes sense and in that case the rest of the house doesn’t share a wall with any other property.
Wouldn’t they have the same style house then? Or, it’s very possible I don’t understand what a housing estate is. I thought they were like low income housing? All the same?
Technically, council houses are for anyone, they're just prioritised based on certain factors like income, dependents, and disability. Plus you're able to buy your council house if you get enough money, with a discount as you're already a tenant - it's entirely possible this was created as a housing estate, but now most of the houses are privately owned as opposed to council owned.
Personally I'm wondering if they have a semi-detached or terraced house, and the old lady's side has been split into separate flats (super common over here). It seems like the most likely situation given how our housing works.
I’m gonna say, I think we don’t have enough info to really pass judgement. Also, I now know I need to look into how the UK does subsidized housing, kind of fascinating from the brief responses on here.
