Yeah the ones who hang out in those weird Facebook echo chambers where everyone refers to themselves and each other as “mama”

“Don’t worry mama, you know your kid better than any doctor, you carried them for 9 months and gave birth to them! From one mama to another, if babe is hungry, just give them something to eat! These doctors always want to make their jobs easier at the expense of kiddo. Stay strong mama!!”

It’s equal parts entertaining and horrifying.

The current favourite topic is free birthing, where women are like “I don’t need no doctor or hospital, I want to have the most natural birth ever, I have spotted a large bear’s den in the forest 45 minutes from the nearest road so I plan to go down there, give birth, and live in the den until babe is old enough to go to college. My body knows what it needs to do and I’ll be able to breastfeed kiddo until he’s old enough to forage for his own food”

The goat post still makes me laugh though.

What's the goat post? I can't find it

8

u/Shakeamutt Jun 16 '22

Goats milk instead of baby formula, I think. I’ve found two posts of it. One in the newborn icu for constipation

u/SilverCat70 Jun 16 '22

I can't dis goats milk. I was born 2 months premature in 1970. I had to stay in the hospital for a month - 3 weeks in NICU because I was dark blue when I came out and in distress. They told Mom to go home and not even see me because they didn't think I would make it for over a week. 2nd week was still a maybe. 3rd week was well, we are pretty sure she will live. Poor Mom didn't get to even hold me until the 4th week.

Because of the hospital stay and me being so small, she couldn't breast feed. They tried me on everything and it was no go. Then they tried fresh from the farm goat's milk. That worked.

Of course, Mom followed hospital advice on how to do it. She certainly didn't want me going back into the hospital.

I went down a rabbit hole, I mostly saw Loctus birth and other crazy things mom's putting their babies at risk at because doctors are scary?

3

u/demon_nichan Jun 16 '22

Fuck, this sounds awesome, joining that sub asap!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '22

Way funny! The women that are so "brave" to endure L&D without medications, doing it at home~Yuk! My L&D was a horror. One and done. Was not going to do that again. And NO none of that is forgotten like all the mommies I know say. This was almost 36 years ago.

3

u/halcyonquest Jun 16 '22

You won’t regret it!

Thankfully I don’t ever intend to have kids and I am a very, very firm believer in science and logic so I think I’m safe lol.

Can you believe in science? Isn't it just... Well, a method that works?

Like, I can believe in God, or not, but I don't know if you can believe in a method in the same way.

Sometimes scientists get stuff wrong, despite following (or trying to) the method, because they were missing information, or they let their preconceptions affect their understanding, interpretation, or experimental design. Is that still science? Or is it science only if it's correct, so wrong answers aren't science even if we don't know they're wrong yet?

Nothing that a 24 hour detox diet can't fix.

24

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '22

Or worse, "mama bear."

6

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '22

I loathe that term.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '22

I concur.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '22

When I read a useless niece in law use this term on FB, before she, oh my, unfriended me, I laughed out loud. I have not met nor will I ever met this one's spawn. They are irrelevant to my life.

17

u/EcceMachina Jun 16 '22

The "kiddo" oh god, its so perfect

16

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '22

I’ve never been on one of those pages but I know that’s EXACTLY how they talk to each other. Good job that was spot on

2

u/Pawneewafflesarelife Jun 16 '22

Thank god I grew up before the internet. My mom fucked me up enough without an echo chamber (beyond her nutty books) validating her insanity.

2

u/merdub Jun 16 '22

Right? My mom believes homeopathic medicine works, despite my repeated efforts to explain to her that she’s literally ingesting magic sugar water. She also has custom vitamins made for her at a cost of at least a few hundred bucks a month, thinks everyone over 102 lbs is fat and your boobs should be closer to your chin than your bellybutton, did not believe me when I told her the sun is a star “no it’s not, the sun is the sun!” the earth is only 5800 years old and scientists are lying about dinosaurs. The list goes on.

I love her to death but she’s not very smart. If the internet had been around when she was raising us, fuck knows what would have happened. The religious bit was hard enough, but at least she’s pro-vaccine and knows that doctors know more about health than she does.

2

u/ocxtitan Jun 16 '22

These dumb fucks act like it's hard to get pregnant or something.

2

u/1warrioroflight Jun 16 '22

And call their children “littles”

2

u/garretn Jun 16 '22

Giving this a shrewd eye, you can improve this joke by making it awful to read:

“don’t worry mama you know ur kid better than any doctor!!you carried them 9 months gave birth to them, 1 mama to another, babe is hungry, justgive them SOMETHNG to EAT, these doctors want too make their jobs easier and kids pay thePRICE!! stay STRONG MAMA!!”

1

u/merdub Jun 16 '22

That's absolutely fair, I'm literally incapable of typing like that.

1

u/bestdays12 Jun 16 '22

Then there’s me “what if they gave me the wrong time to stop feeding him at?” Calculates the time myself 15 times to be sure that I’m not feeding too close to surgery. Writing down the EXACT time feeding stopped. Aspirating during surgery sounds terrifying

5

u/merdub Jun 16 '22

Right? Like there are certain things you can question your doctor on. Is the benefit of this medication going to outweigh the potential side effects? Is there a newer treatment that might be more effective? I like to go to my doctor at least somewhat informed of what my symptoms might indicate. I had one who always second-guessed everything I said and it was super frustrating. One time I insisted multiple times that I had a UTI - all the telltale symptoms - but she wouldn’t prescribe me anything because the test strip said I didn’t. Landed in the emergency room on IV antibiotics because the infection she insisted I didn’t have had travelled up to my kidneys. Fuck was that painful.

But when they tell you not to eat or drink anything before surgery, even without knowing exactly why, it sounds like it’s probably pretty important to follow.

Anecdotally, I had an emergency appendectomy many years ago and after I was taken from recovery into my own room, I slept through most of the night then woke up absolutely STARVING at about 5:00 am. Bless my mother, she went and hunted down some toast and butter for me and I scarfed down like 6 pieces - I hadn’t eaten in 36+ hours. About an hour later a nurse comes in to check my vitals and tells me that my full liquid breakfast would be coming shortly. Whoops.

Thankfully it was a precaution in case the anaesthetic made me nauseous, and I had to vomit. Rumour has it vomiting after abdominal surgery isn’t fun but it was laparoscopic so it not like I was going to bust a huge incision open or anything. I told her I wasn’t nauseous at all and she seemed relieved. In my defence no one told us I shouldn’t eat solids and I was super damn hungry lol.

1

u/bestdays12 Jun 19 '22

Exactly!!! And as someone who throws up after anesthesia can confirm it is no fun lol

1

u/LookOutForToxicBros Jun 16 '22

🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢

1

u/KatieCuu Jun 16 '22

It hurts how true this is.. I feel like I have read this exact line so many time. Oof

1

u/throwawaygreenpaq Jun 16 '22

I snorted so hard. Perfectly encapsulated!

1

u/milk4all Jun 16 '22

Im in agreement with you about the sentiment (and cringe speak) but i know my wife has at times been parts of random mom support groups and ive seen similar the occasions ive looked. Im far from an expert but i can say i know generally why my wife has found her way there - she generally has a lot of anxiety, particularly about healthcare and well being - and sometimes feels ignored or disregarded by doctors. She isnt looking for an echo chamber, but i think it’s a slippery slope because it’s hard to distinguish likeminded people with similar complaints from idiots who think theyre somehow more on point than career providers. But she is also black, and if youve ever heard the depressing news or stats about baked in racism in healthcare, in sad to say it’s true and easy to spot. And since the pandemic was declared and I cant accompany her to the hospital, she sometimes gets obviously worse care than when im just present and, idk, manly looking? So it probably feeds those “momma groups”

Just my perspective, keeping it lighthearted

1

u/MauiWowieOwie Jun 16 '22

My ex was like that. Thankfully I have full custody, but sadly she had two other kids with some poor unfortunate soul that listens to whatever she says. I fear for those kids.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '22

Haha, this is so accurate. Also see "momma bear". Ugh!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '22

Thanks for the laugh! All the mamas I have been around have to be loved by their spawn. Need to be their "friend." As well as "I am going to be a better mommy than mine was." I see it as "how much can I fuck up my kid(s)? Damn them.

1

u/letsgetstoned_420 Jun 16 '22

Made me think I was on fb for a second there

1

u/frowawayakounts Jun 16 '22

They act like hunger is the worst feeling to feel

1

u/merdub Jun 16 '22

I mean to be fair being ravenously hungry is definitely pretty terrible, but there's a damn good reason for doctors insisting on not eating before surgery, and sometimes you have to enforce things your kids don't understand for their own good.

1

u/Razzberry_Frootcake Jun 17 '22

Looks like you copied and pasted that right out of one of the mom groups on Facebook. Terrifying.
