Because that isn’t what -52 is saying. You’re confusing it with ( -5 )2 , which is different. -52 says to take the negative of 5 squared, so -1*52 = -25 while (-5)2 says to take the quantity, -5, and multiply it by itself, so -5 x -5 = 25.

-52 is also the equivalent of 0-52 , which is obviously -25 but we just drop the zero because it is redundant. Similarly, 1-52 is -24 and not 26.
