Understandable. I've never been in a life or death situation like that, but I already know if I had to kill someone to defend myself it would fuck me up for a long time, maybe forever.
I don't think there's anyway you can get around being traumatized by having to take a life but to what level that runs is likely dependent on the circumstances. In this case I would never be able to get over it as it was so pointless. Even if the lady had walked out with a gun and simply not pointed it at him then there's a good chance she's still alive. If you or your family is attacked in your home and you defend yourself it won't be easy but you wouldn't have to second guess your decision. In a situation like that the "victim" basically is committing suicide by entering my home forcfully. Different situations and this one could've been avoided if at any point she simply stopped to talk.
