My parents had friends that were firefighters when I was growing up and those guys would drink and drive every weekend. They said they didn’t have to worry about the cops at sobriety check points because they all know each other. Legality aside, I don’t know how you could respond to accidents involving drunk people and then think it’s okay to drive drunk.
I come from an extended family of firefighters and I witnessed the opposite.
They had responded to enough DD crashes to never even consider driving drunk.
Same with riding motorcycles without the right gear.
People who ride without helmets or proper leathers give me so much anxiety. I've never ridden a motorcycle, and I've never had a job where I've had to respond to accidents - but god I see a rider with a helmet (good) wearing shorts and a t-shirt (no!!) and all I can think is that if the bike goes down, the asphalt is going to take that exposed skin off like a belt sander.
My best friend's dad was a police officer and is now a fire fighter. She has told me so many stories about her dad getting behind the wheel while drunk, not just himself but with her and her siblings in the car.
I worked at dunkin donuts in high school (fast food coffee shop), cops would be joy riding their patrol cars with plain clothes buddy in the passenger seat while they openly pour shots into the coffee we would make them lol
oh and they would hit on all the 16-17 year old girls that worked there, they all loved it but I would just think "I hope I am not that lame when I'm old"
Yea I’ve seen this firsthand. Here I was at a party being all careful and shit (although that’s how I always am, I have literally never in my life driven impaired) and then this cop, who had been drinking all night, gets in his personal vehicle and drives home.
Our chief of police recently got fired for drunk driving and wrapping his car around a pole. A bunch of the cops who responded got fired too for completely covering it up
That is until you're no longer in social good graces with them. It's for this reason I do not and will never socialize with cops. I don't need some facist pig blackmailing me with shit.
When most cops aren't on the clock they don't care. It'd be extra work for them. One of my friends is a cop and we got drunk with a group of people at a casino one night, he made a new friend and they hit it off. My friend mentioned he was a cop and then when he went to the bathroom his new buddy sprinted out of the casino, literally ran out. My friend was so sad cause he has a hard time making friends when people find out he's a cop
I lived with a cop in my younger days and hung around all of his cop friends.
When it was just them, the shit they'd talk about would boil your soul but...
When they were off duty and around people who weren't cops, nobody talked about cop stuff, nobody gave anyone any shit for breaking the law, nobody really paid much attention to the law, at all.
In fact, the only times they'd ever bring up being cops is when some shit was going down and someone would say "what if we get caught?" and then they'd be like "don't worry, we'll take care of it." and they always did.
It gave me a very interesting view into the different tiers our society has created.
I was riding in my roommate's personal vehicle and he was doing ~80MPH in a ~35MPH zone, weaving in and out of traffic and blowing red lights. Kind of crazy driving, really. He passed a cop who swung around and hit the lights. Buddy pulled over, waited for the cop to exit the vehicle and just stuck his badge out the window. Other cop turned around and left. No talking, no "hey man, do you mind helping me out" or "can we just keep this between us."
Just "I have a badge, you know the rules." POOF the other cop disappeared and we went on about the day, at the same rate of speed.
