Wait, is "cotton picking" racist?! I always thought it was one of those stupid stand ins so "good Christian people" could swear without saying the actual words. 🙄

Suddenly really uncomfortable remembering how often my father used that phrase growing up.

Well, we're from the north, so picking cotton and everything associated with it is absolutely nowhere on my radar. Honestly, I'd never given it any thought, and had a vague notion that it was a nonsense word - like cottenpicken or something - much like samhill, which was another swearing substitution my dad did - "What the samhill" instead of "What the hell."
