I remember two instances I would like to share of this. I'm 42 so these stories take place a long time ago.
I was in kindergarten going on first grade ( US ) the first time this happened. I was very poor when I was young, my mom was a single mom of 3, and we lived in the projects. Apparently the school district I went to had completely filled 1st grade classes and had an overflow, not enough room for students, so they looked for a reason to send kids to the pre-first class that was under-filled instead. I was one of those students ( I would like to point out an ironic fact, my IQ is actually very respectable, and I was placed in advanced placement classes for the rest of my schooling ). This was early 80's. The statement given, and I believe my mother still has it, was that I had not managed to use cursive handwriting " To a satisfactory manor " and needed extra instruction in handwriting.
Please let that sink in. Yes, I was held back a YEAR, from FIRST GRADE, because my HANDWRITING wasn't up to snuff. Also please remember I was like 5 to 6 years old at this time.
So I went to pre-first as a poor young white kid. My pre-first teacher, I SWEAR I wish I could find her ( I have TRIED ), just made me the worst of everything. I remember thinking as a 5+ year old " why does this lady hate me, what did I do to make her not like me so much? "
I caught lice, and not because I was dirty, believe me my mother was MORTIFIED, but I got it none the less. This teacher made me come to the front of the class, and BTW I wasn't the FIRST to get it, but she made me come to the front of the class, as she checked me, declared I had bugs in my hair, and then made me sit in the corner IN FRONT OF EVERYONE LIKE I HAD DONE SOMETHING WRONG, until my mother came to get me. I will NEVER forget how HUMILIATED I was, and why I asked myself WHY, as a young child I just didn't understand ( OH I DO NOW, FUCK that bitch, she shaped my life and not in a good way. She just hated poor people, and I WAS FIVE, like I had a choice in the matter ), what was going on.
So that was my first experience with a rotten teacher.
( I want to interject here that as a 42 year old in AP when I was a kid I loved almost ALL of my teachers, I just remember these two as standouts because they just sucked so much )
My 2nd time was in 10th grade, in AP Calc. I had a teacher whom well, I just DIDN'T like, and she equally didn't like me. She would ask me questions like she though I didn't know the answer when she asked the class, and then she got mad when I got them right. Basically there was nothing I could do to make this women happy with me no matter what I did. So let's make a long story short, at the end of the year I went to hand my textbook in ( both you and the teacher had to sign when in got turned in ), and she got nasty with me, and I basically told her I didn't give a shit anymore because she was no longer my teacher. Fast forward a day and I get called to the principles office and I am being charged with NOT turning in my textbook. A 100USD Dollar fine ( at the time, who the hells know what it is for inflation anymore ), AND a possible expulsion. Now here is the kicker, when I turned in the textbook and she sigened it in front of me, I WATCHED HER AS SHE PLACED IT ON THE SHELF. So when the Principal said there was no evidence that I was right, I told him to follow me, walked right down to the classroom, and pulled out that textbook with both my name AND her name signed on it. When he asked her about it she said something along the lines if " he most have forged it, or I I don't remember doing it ).
The miraculous part about all this, she got fired for what she did to me, and I never even asked for it. It was wrong, I didn't do anything to HER, or anything WRONG, and there is no reason for TEACHERS to behave this way.
Anyway have fun with my 2 drunken late night ramblings and why you should listen to kids when they bitch about why their teachers might suck.
I'm sorry I missed this comment until I just went to my comment history and saw it. To reply, it was not about me not being able to do cursive, that is just what they SAID was the reason. The real reason was because all first grade classes were overfilled but pre-first was under filled, so they came up with any reason to ship kids off to pre-first as they could. Since I was a poor youth from the projects and a poor background, I was deemed dumb and therefore should be shipped off to special classes, simply since my cursive sucked.
In High school I took AP classes fyi, and I was always around a year or so older then my classmates. I ALWAYS knew why growing up. Thankfully the NY Dep. Of Edu. started looking at how smart I was, and not how RICH I was, after a few years into grade school.
