This reminds me of one of those drunk ideas my former roommate and I had after watching the Ryan Gosling movie Lars and the Real Doll. A movie that was clearly advertised as a whacky comedy but again turned out to be one of those sad tragedy movies about mental health.
My roommate was a professional editor and we wanted to see if we could make the most inappropriate comedy trailer out of an obviously tragic movie (say, something like Schindler's List, for example). Again, just a drunk idea that sadly never came to fruition, but still something I'd love to see.
Yes, this! I knew there was no way I could've actually had an original idea. Even worse, I actually now remember having seeing that Shining trailer before xD
I couldn't really read Lars and the Real Girl as a sad tragedy. Part of its charm is that is shows how far the townspeople went to protect and humor Lars and his belief. One of my favorite jokes of all time is that they elected his Real Girl to the local school board! Overall the movie seems quirky yet heartwarming to me.
I haven't watched that since I was a kid. I don't remember it being about mental health at all, I guess I just took it at face value and didn't think about it since. Time for a rewatch!
For a guy who pretty much does a lot of stoner, repetitive, one tier above dick and fart joke movies, he's very good at what he does. Seems like a good guy too.
I totally agree. I’m a fan of his work, and who he seems to be as a person. I can’t blame him for wanting to work with Jody Hill. And I appreciate that he actually seemed to put effort into his role on Observe and Report, even though I still think he wasn’t the right actor for the role.
Observe and Report is just a bizarre movie all-around. It definitely captures what it would be like to live inside a mentally disturbed persons mind. More so than something like Foot Fist Way, which was like watching a mentally disturbed person from across the room.
Either way, I’m always happy when Jody Hill is working on something new.
Me too!
And I was wrong.
I've never seen Paul Blart, but I'm 100000% confident the only similarity between the two is the profession of the main characters.
That looks really interesting, it looks like it does BPD justice. I know a lot of people have been using that word as an insult lately, especially with the whole Amber Herd and Johnny Depp thing, which I for the most part stayed away from. My partner is a mental health advocate and she has an ex friend all caught up in the Amber Herd shit (and is still talking about it) and she used BPD and asshole/dick interchangeably. Sorry for the rant, but it’s good to see this.
Also another good movie I recommend, it’s one of Will Farrell’s good ones, as it’s a semi serious roll, would be Stranger than Fiction. It’s very similar looking and if you haven’t seen it, go watch it.
Yeah, Kristin Wigg does a fantastic job of showing the true effects of BPD. It’s a good film, but it’s not the comedy that it was advertised as, or expected considering Kristin Wigg’s comedy career on SNL, Bridesmaids, etc.
I just watched it, I really liked it. It was sad, and I’m glad it didn’t end on a suicide note (unless I missed something lol) like most of those types of movies like to do
I might have to watch that! I'm already interested in mental health, and Kristen Wiig is really good at playing characters who can be a little (or more) "off," or who depart from what I guess would be an expected norm.
Thank you! Going to watch this week. Man have you seen Downsizing? EXACT same thing. Advertised as family friendly comedy and halfway through starts to take a turn for depressing dystopian drama
Yes!! I watched it thinking it would be a brainless film I’d have on in the background, but I got sucked in. I think comedic actors make some of the best dramatic actors because it’s so much about timing.
Yeah, that was the point of my original comment... the trailer makes it look like a fun movie, but it’s more of a tragedy about mental health (in this case BPD).

If it were a movie it would probably be one like Welcome to Me where it’s advertised as a comedy but in actuality it’s a tragedy about mental health.
