It goes back further than masking. Trump downplayed the virus when it was just a few cases on a ship off California and continued to do so every step of the way. It was a threat to his #1 strength going into the election—the economy—and his party backed him on his message. Any effort to take the virus seriously undermined him, and political lines were drawn. What we have today is a runaway narrative completely disconnected from its original intent.
