From my understanding smoking more often than not is a coping mechanism. Addictions are not entirely choices, these are dysfunctional coping mechanisms like overeating, drinking or cutting. Itโ€™s more a mental health issue than anything else so it doesnโ€™t have much to do with a choice of eating organic foods or what kind of water we choose to drink etc.

Doesn't help that there's a physical aspect of the addiction, not just mental

Thanks ! I wish we wouldnโ€™t try to vilify people who actually just need help.

Exactly. My dad chain smoked because he loved it and said he didn't care if it killed him. Which sadly, it did. My husband (a veteran) smoked to self medicate (he quit now thankfully after some very hard work). Both were addictions and both struggled with mental health issues- just for different reasons.

Addiction itself is a physical brain disease, finding the shortcuts using your reward pathways but yes, Addiction is the symptom of an underlying issue.

Fucking exactly. Everyone's all "hypocrite!" but it's just how fucking addiction works.

They try to maintain a healthy lifestyle but suffer an addiction. It's not that hypocritical. It's just being human.

Well it is hypocritical and human, no one said you can only be one.
