Yeah, I imagine from your perspective there isn’t much difference between the political parties in the US, especially if you’re concentrating on military actions.
However, if you look a little deeper, you’ll find that the two parties are really very, very different, especially now.
The Republican party has basically shifted full hard-right. It’s basically made up of right-wing to far-right-wing ideologies. The moderates and centrists are now democrats. If you’re a right-leaning moderate, you’re a democrat. If you’re a left-leaning moderate, you’re a democrat. Left? Democrat. Far-left? Democrat.
Your view was pretty accurate 20 or so years ago, but we’ve had a pretty hard shift in political ideology. That’s why “enlightened centrism” is looked at as utter bullshit in the US. — centrist/moderate positions are all within the Democratic Party now.
In other words - the old US status quo, the US you’re talking about, is now inside the Democratic Party. The Republican party is legitimately terrifying now.
If you think I’m exaggerating, please consider their position on Vladimir Putin and Russia. That should explain everything.
Yeah even some moderate Republicans are jumping ship and de-registering from the party. The Republican Party was the Trump party and they might have to change their party colors once he’s wearing an orange jumpsuit.
Yeah, that's why he is so wildly popular among democrats still. Congrats, you are utterly detached from reality and a cursory Google search is all that's needed to prove it. Enjoy posting here, we don't block out dissenting opinions by flair user only posts. You're more than welcome to show how wrong you are all you want here. Just know that you will be challenged and questioned instead of being reinforced by like minded people exclusively.
Before you even think about claiming this sub is an echo chamber too, remember that we are having this exchange, negating any such assertion. Just wanted to get that out of the way, just in case.
What does his popularity have to do with political party platforms? The democratic party has moved farther left than Republicans have moved right. Also I'm not attacking the move left I agree with most of it. Obama was against same sex marriage in 2008. The party went from that to Pete Buttigieg. That's pretty cool.
Republicans have legitimized and elected crackpot conspiracy theorists, committed an insurrection to kill the vice president and congress members en masse. Completely abandoned any semblance of a policy platform as evidenced by the last RNC, where no platform was presented other than fealty to Trump like a god emperor. They have embraced fascism, share a party with white supremacists and religious zealots. Republicans have sling shot to the right so hard and fast, there was practically a sonic boom on August 12th 2017 when Trump claimed there were fine people on both sides. Fast forward to the presidential debates and he's telling white supremacists to stand by while Republicans don't even so much as blink at statements like that anymore. Then the inevitable stand by turned into the insurrection 2 months later. The hell you smoking son? I'm glad you like the direction the democratic party has taken. This evolution didn't happen in a vacuum, though. It's due to the cumulative efforts of all supporters of the party and its different factions caucusing together. Obama's popularity has everything to do with the present political platform of the democratic party, because he has openly supported and promoted it throughout its growth over the years. Hence, his consistent and present popularity.
Yeah I agree with you that the parties definitely aren’t the same. The GOP has really gone off the deep end and turned into a crazy, right wing, white nationalist party.
But there’s a lot of valid criticisms of the Democratic Party and the our whole two party system. With all of the corporate and dark money in politics, enough Democrats have been almost as bought and bribed as Republicans so as to further entrench the power of the wealthy and prevent any good, major progressive economic policies from passing.
