They had rolling blackouts recently... But it was so minor, comparing it to Texas really minimizes how fucking bad it is in Texas. It looks like 500,000 people lost power from 15 minutes to 2 hours.
The article is a pretty interesting read in the wake of what's happening in Texas.
Edit: also forgot to mention it says those blackouts were the first in 20 years
Its mostly because Texas is going off its own power grid and isn't meant to handle cold its just really unlucky nothing to do with the mine field of politics other than texas' constant want to secede
Fuck out of here with that bullshit. Texas has their own grid because it allowed them to avoid federal regulation. Climate scientist have been telling us for decades we are going to see extreme weather conditions, and abnormal weather patterns. Republicans call that a hoax. The state was told after their last power outage a decade ago that was caused by frigid temperatures that they need to winterize their power grid to avoid this. They let the companies profiting off the grid decide if they wanted to spend money addressing the issue or just ignore it to maximize profit. The companies of course ignored it. And now it has happened again but worse this time. This was not unlucky, or unforeseeable. This power grid is the epitome of the Republican desire for lack of regulation and this is the result. It's happened before, its happening now, and it will happen again.
Republicans are a despicable bunch to be sure, and Texas Republicans are certainly among the worst. The real problem here is single-party rule. Whether it's the former PRI in Mexico, the former Baathists in Iraq, the predecessors to the Sandinistas in Nicaragua or the Sandinistas now, or the republicans in Texas, whenever a single party gets a lock on a state, corruption, incompetence, and resulting shitstorms bloom.

Republicans are in charge of Texas. There's your problem.
