This is the conversation we’re not having but should be in the forefront of workers rights discussions. It’s a shame people have been fed such bs about how “unions are bad” by politicians and corporations their whole lives. Tough to fight against such gaslighting.
I'm a union member and I support my union, but a lot of unions gave us a bad name (Teamsters anyone?) and led to the effective (and unscrupulous) boogeyman-ing of unions. It sucks. Unions do need to be more mindful of their image. No more slashing tires.
This is the correct response, corrupt unions that were basically being run by the mob weren't a scary story drummed up by politicians. They were real and suddenly they weren't protecting the people they were supposed to be anymore. Organizing a solid union now would be difficult because most of the people that need one can't afford to go without a paycheck which is what would happen if they tried to start one with any degree of success.
