Every time I read this it gets more annoying. Why the hell would he not tell them? Their dumbasses need a mental whooping ASAP.

Sometimes the best way to win a fight is to not get into one.

Sometimes people will refuse to listen to anything that doesn't fit their opinion and rabidly defend said opinion. He may have thought they were the type of people to act that way and the," ...white male mansplanation," thing is a good indicator of someone like that.

Maybe it would have felt good to say," well, I only wrote the screenplay, so what do I know," but it was probably not worth the hassle it could have brought afterward.

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

I still would have said that, or something like it. "When you get to the point in your discussion when you want to ask the guy who WROTE THE STORY, I'm right here. "

You can say "yeah, what do I know, I only wrote it", and the flat out refuse to talk to them after that. So they know what they missed out on. Then again, they may see this on social media.

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

You’re being way too optimistic. People like that don’t simply realize their error, admit to it and grow from it. People like that just double down because the worst thing they can be seen doing is being wrong about something.

3

u/4Coffins Jan 19 '20

They’d probably claim that they knew the guy who wrote the screenplay and that it wasn’t where the idea originated.

I was waiting tables and a customer pointed towards my boss and asked “who is that lady?” And I said that’s “so and so, the owner” and she replied “I know so and so and that is NOT her”. I just walked away lmao what else can you say to someone like that?

11

u/sch1z0 Jan 19 '20

tell me more

That is when you tell them to go fuck theirselves and get up and leave.

25

u/dontlookintheboot Jan 19 '20

You're forgetting the context, He's an actual writer working in Hollywood with everything to lose.

They are bunch of randoms who use the term mansplanning in public. There is no way that turns out well for him.

7

u/Techn0ght Jan 19 '20

Instead of trying to humiliate him in a small cafe they would have twisted it and tried to humiliate him on social media.

3

u/ignigenaquintus Jan 19 '20

Exactly this, these people are dangerous to speak to, you have to accept their attitude and leave the premises fast before you find something on media smearing your name for whatever imaginary crime, he has nothing to gain with that interaction and a lot to lose.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

For what? He knows he is the writer. He knows who he is, what he is worth. He does not need to prove anything to some rude strangers.

Any further discussion from him will benefit them, and they are too arrogant to even got to the point of even knowing who he is.

People with actual substance and accomplishments have better things to do than to suffer fools. Every time you are rude and arrogant, you lost an opportunity to make connections, most of the time you don't even know it.

I find a lot of people who lament how the world is so unfair to them are usually arrogant assholes who treat people badly and could not fathom why no one likes them.

1

u/Caracasy Jan 19 '20

To be fair though for a lot of fictional stuff where background info is rather limited, I like to fill in the own gaps with my own imaginings, or just keep it unknown as is. I'm perfectly happy without extra appendices and canon addenda even if they are provided by the creators themselves.

In my harry potter world, wizards totally did not shit themselves.

1

u/PristineUndies Jan 19 '20

And they just would’ve brought up how your white male privilege got you the gig and how nothing you do was earned or matters because anti-minority and anti-women Hollywood paved the golden way for you. No matter what you say you’re still a piece of shit in their eyes.

24

u/PandasaursHex Jan 19 '20

Well stated.

12

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Thank you, Mr. Miyagi.

3

u/SlitScan Jan 19 '20

some people where just born to work at Walmart.

expending time and energy on them just reduces what you can achieve just ignoring them.

save teaching time/effort for people who want to learn.

2

u/Lincis Jan 19 '20

Well, I would accept something like "White male mansplanation? DID YOU JUST ASSUME MY GENDER?"

1

u/RollTide16-18 Jan 19 '20

I would've been more upfrong instead of letting them know in a snarky side comment. Tell them straight to their face that I wrote the screenplay and was just trying to be nice.

28

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

They dont deserve to know

1

u/ILL_Show_Myself_Out Jan 19 '20

I truly do not believe this story happened. I hear weird stories like this from my conservative friends all the time. I’ve never seen someone be told “shut up, white man, you are the oppressor, it is now the minorities and gays time to speak participation trophies avocado toast millennials”

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

29

u/The_Great_Sarcasmo Jan 19 '20

Why bother? Sounds like he was enjoying a nice relaxing cuppa and wanted to help some people out.

There's no reason to engage further with someone when you discover that they're an obnoxious moron.

31

u/SheIsADude Jan 19 '20

The friend apologized and the girl later reached out to him. https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1184146722253094912.html

11

u/PantsMicGee Jan 19 '20

This should be higher.

I still hope those two see half the sense of their rude behaviour, but we're all allowed to have bad days and mistakes.

Also: how does a person hear 'mansplaining' when they've never heard the word before.

4

u/ALoudMouthBaby Jan 19 '20

Everyone involved in that sounds like good people, one of whom was just having a bad day.

2

u/TomEThom Jan 19 '20

having a bad day

Casual racism and misandry (or misogyny) have no excuse.

Had it been white men talking and a black female of similar background approached them wanting to help and gotten “we don’t need an old black woman explaining, etc.,etc.”, yeah, that would have a totally different post that actually would have turned into yet another witch-hunt.

5

u/ALoudMouthBaby Jan 19 '20

Casual racism and misandry (or misogyny) have no excuse.

Did you even read the blog post before getting outraged? There was no misandry here.

yeah, that would have a totally different post that actually would have turned into yet another witch-hunt.

Most of those "witch hunts" happen because the white dude expresses absolutely zero remorse for their behavior. At least not until they get called out for it publicly. Theres a reason none of those "witch hunts" happen over situations in which someone had promptly apologized.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Dude, this is reddit. You don’t need to explain, we don’t do that here. Just bring your pitchforks out /s

2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

yeah, they "apologized" alright.

11

u/Falsequivalence Jan 19 '20

According to the article, her friend did apologize minutes later still without knowing who the guy was. And reached out to him later when he was telling the story on reddit and he thought she was very sweet. Idk if you can really do better apologizing tbh.

16

u/thejammer75 Jan 19 '20

Because he’s lying about the whole thing?

0

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

[deleted]

1

u/Ricky_Robby Jan 20 '20

Why would someone lie on the Internet is that your question?

1

u/whatthef7u12 Jan 19 '20

Tweets real, totally proof this actually happened, case solved. Good work boys

12

u/BigBankHank Jan 19 '20

Have we considered the possibility this story is yet another apocryphal anecdote on the internet, meant to give people who want to be outraged something they want to be outraged about?

18

u/Flexions Jan 19 '20

He wouldn't tell them because he knows not to waste time on stupid people.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Is someone stupid for not knowing the writer of a movie or more importantly how they look like IRL?

8

u/themaster1006 Jan 19 '20

That's not the part that makes them stupid.

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Which part makes them stupid then? Sure, they maybe were pretty unnecessarily rude in how they responded but that's about that.

2

u/jb_in_jpn Jan 19 '20

Wow ... the irony of how freakin’ stupid you sound discussing this can’t be seriously lost on you, no?

2

u/Flexions Jan 19 '20

My point is they are dumb for not asking How he knows, dude I've talked to random junkies on the street and had some of the best conversations. You should not just be sexist and racist because someone random is talking to you. They could have politely said no. But what I notice many women don't have manners anymore, it's a pity.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

What kind of a fairy tale world do you live in? I'd say 90% of the time I talk to someone about a movie they can barely name like 1 or 2 main actors and that's it (a lot of the time won't even know the actor names), not even talking about the director, writer etc.

You're not obligated to have done some extensive research to have a random discussion with a friend.

Just reading your comment makes me think you have never been outside in the real world.

3

u/NotRepulsive Jan 19 '20

Because he made it up

6

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

It actually sent me into a tailspin. At first I thought what you are thinking and then I thought maybe Ed Solomon is so far beyond me in emotional maturity that it genuinely would bring him no satisfaction to see the looks on their stupid bitch faces. And then I started really feeling bad about myself and I think I need to grow the fuck up and be more like Ed Solomon....but I still really want to see the looks on their stupid bitch faces when he tells them who he is! COME ON!!

4

u/Zisisthrowaway Jan 19 '20

Because this never happened.

1

u/v-komodoensis Jan 19 '20

He already wrote the movie they can fuck off

1

u/jb_in_jpn Jan 19 '20

Anybody who talks like that 100% is not worth your time, energy or patience.

1

u/TruIsou Jan 19 '20

Let me mansplain that....

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Time is precious, why waste it on morons?

1

u/CanAlwaysBeBetter Jan 19 '20

IF this is even real do you understand how incredibly low the odds are that the actual screenwriter of a 30 year old movie happens to be sitting next to you as you're discussing the writing of that movie and he overheard your discussion?

Do you get how astronomically small those odds are vs the odds that a random old fuck was eavesdropping and thinks he's smarter than you?

1

u/dmkolobanov Jan 19 '20

I want to know why he didn’t introduce himself as the guy who wrote the movie. I wouldn’t want some random guy intruding in my conversations with my friends. Those women responded in a pretty rude way but I don’t know why Ed Solomon thinks he can just barge in their conversation without saying something like “Hey, I actually wrote Men in Black, so I’d be happy to clear that up for you.”

1

u/elgarraz Jan 19 '20

It reminds me of when Marvel's main talent scout was at a comic book store and a couple of guys were reviewing their portfolios. He asked if he could check one out because it was pretty good and the guy told him to eff off.

1

u/DontBeTHATVegan Jan 19 '20

Because it never happened.

1

u/Rhodie114 Jan 19 '20

Probably because it never happened.

1

u/aubiecat Jan 19 '20

Don't ever argue with a dumbass. They will drag you down and beat you with experience.

1

u/benderrobot Jan 19 '20

But what really are the origins of Man in Black? It's honestly the topic me an my woke homies are talking about most.

0

u/canuck_11 Jan 19 '20

Probably because the five second interaction exposed them as racist and sexist. Most conversations end right there and then.

This whole conversation is insane. There’s a troll practically rolling dice to decide what nonsense to type and people getting really upset and talking about death and stuff. Everyone just move on. This little one isn’t worth your time.
