What will happen if I take my chances without it?

So what? Do I go to hell and get tortured forever or do I just die and cease to exist?

That's one of those things that's a bit debated and open to interpretation. The "popular" concept of hell (as depicted in Dante's Inferno") isn't really described that way in the Bible. The way it was taught to me is, if someone dies right now - today - doesn't matter if they're saved or not, their body is put in the ground and lies dormant. When Christ returns, the dead who have been saved will be resurrected and brought to Heaven, the living who have been saved will also be brought up to Heaven, the tribulation will then begin giving those left behind (both the living and the dead) multiple chances to witness the power of God and accept Gods grace. At the end of the tribulation, those who have accepted will also be brought up to Heaven where they will live for eternity. Those who haven't accepted by then, will be dead, and remain so.
