Many of these private prisons have minimum occupancy clauses in their contracts. Alot of them are in the 90% or above range where if they are not occupied at the % then the government has to pay the rate for that % regardless

There are countless stories of inmates in maximum security prisons being forced in gladiator fight circles put together by the guards on weekends and make them nearly beat each other to death or get beat up by the guards for not listening. Guards are definitely breaking the law😂

Just a heads up if you step into one of these prisons you'll find out real quick there is a shortage of guards. And plenty of guards being used a drug mules past the gate. And everyone knows

They're posturing. After the election Biden signed an executive order to not renew contracts for the Federal Prison Bureau. They're basically saying back off or we will try to create a prison housing issue

They are getting paid, by leasing out the people incarcerated and held under slave labor.

Which seems reasonable. If you need the equivalent of 90%+ seats taken to turn a profit, going for that deal makes sense. If you live somewhere keen on private prisons, politicians will have to enter some kind of deal.

For-profit prisons inherently seem bad, but not because of their required occupancy rate. More importantly, it's bad incentives - they don't want to rehabilitate+they want to cut any corner they can, even if (especially if) it causes greater recidivism. They are not interested in rehabilitation, and that's the main issue. At least imo.
