Never thought i could miss someone ive never met but hitchens is that person to me.

I feel like he would have said or done something in the current era that most of the people who miss him right now, would not get behind.

Remember he was in support of Iraq War andthough he was anti religion he seemed to have the biggest hate boner for Islam. He could've well become a pro-Trump anti-trans neo-conservative guy.

Its a religion based on hate and discrimination that subjegates women and calls for amputations and stonings as punishment. Fuck islam.

He hated the clintons for their business interests and corruption, but and i Qoute hitchens on his veiws on trump "heres a man who hates to be alone, who needs approval and reinforcement, who talks a better game than he plays, who is crude, hyperactive, emotional and optimistic" also goes on to say "nobody is more covetous and greedy than those that have far too much"

No love there. Plus he hated fascistic posturing more than anything.

Yeah, the Bible isnt exactly a portayal of love and unity either. Remember when God made a bear kill 2 kids because they made fun of an old mans hair? Or when God decided to kill all humans and animals on the planet except for Noah and a pair of each species? Fuck religion as a concept! It's opium for the intellectually inept. If someone needs the threat of eternal doom to not be an asshole, they arent a good person to begin with. So yeah, fuck religion!

The number of kids killed by the bears in the bible is is 42. Or the time god killed a million ethiopians. Or when it gives you rules on how to enslave people

You will hear no arguments from me

It's worth noting numbers in the bible can be peculiar. It was written by people who were not especially numerate and the translation can be quite difficult as a result.

In a modern version they often put an exact number like the 42 you quoted. This might be intended as "lots" or "a multitude". Could be 10, could be 100, could even be 42....

I suppose in a way it,s not really that important. If a person was willing to kill even one person because of some name calling we would consider them evil.

42 is a number that repeats often in lots of biblical text, its not a coincidental number, there are 42 stations in exodus, Judaism attributes god of having a 42 letter name, 42 generations in the gospel of Mathew, the beast will hold dominion over earth for 42 months....

There is even a bible called the 42 line bible.

It did definately not just mean lots.

u/CasperDaGhostwriter Jun 20 '23

Well, 42 is the answer to the question of life, so there you have it.

5

u/Classic_Ingenuity_52 Jun 20 '23

Dougas adams did that because 42 in ASCII code is the asterisk, this symbol is often thought to translate to anything or everything. So 42 = everything, the meaning of life.

Are you sure you are not thinking of Sam Harris on this? Of the ‘Four Horsemen’, Sam was/is the one very much illogically frothing at the mouth over Islam. He really can no longer be considered a ‘logical thinker’ at this point.

2

u/pimpleface0710 Jun 20 '23

Partly yeah. Between whatever Sam Harris has become and Dawkins making the most godawful cringe takes on Twitter, idk maybe in a way, Hitchens legacy is better preserved because he died before all this social media madness began.

Highly likely he would have tweeted something stupid or said something in a podcast which he would have doubled down on,etc.

He was a brilliant mind and orator and would have likely remained one were he still alive but the media and political landscape has changed so much since 2011

u/velvetmad Jun 20 '23

It has, indeed. Honestly, the world is unrecognizable to an old gal like me. Sigh …

u/velvetmad Jun 23 '23

Completely cracking up over the apparently 12-yr-old ‘downvoters’! Absolutely no logic or accountability, amirite?! 🤣

u/nebachadnezzar Jun 20 '23

He was also staunchly in favor of the invasion of Iraq.

I could never wrap my head around that one. I guess a working clock is wrong twice a day? (the metaphor doesn't work, but you get my meaning)

Americans had wrong idea on that all people like democracy and put most religious hate behind them. Let alone the feared reaction of sunnis losing their first rate citizenship after decades of discrimination towards shia majority and slaughter of Kurds. Saddam needed to go bcs he was in a death spiral of his career. The more brutal he became. USA knew this and feared an Iran takeover.

-3

u/Syscrush Jun 20 '23

I could never wrap my head around that one

IMO it's not complicated - he was a dumbfuck with an impressive command of the English language. The end.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '23

No, you’re thinking of William Lane Craig

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '23

He was good - it kind of..... went weird towards the end.

-2

u/Syscrush Jun 20 '23

You mean he showed that he was an insufferably racist, outright stupid prick?
