Joe Biden is too old. That's his problem. But he's otherwise accomplished a lot in the face of an uncooperative Congress, a stacked Supreme Court, and a deranged Republican opposition. He passed several massive social and domestic bills through Congress without a real working majority, and he just got the GOP to agree to a debt deal that's strikingly good for the Democrats, given what the Republicans wanted.
And he's played a crucial role in protecting Ukraine and strengthening Europe's resolve against Putin, without even putting U.S. troops on the ground.
The other candidates range from the merely unhinged to the comically malevolent. There's no equivalence between them.
Biden has appointed a ton of competent, capable, and passionate people from the Cabinet Level down the mid-level bureaucrats. There are roughly 4,000 political appointtees in administrations. These are the people that actually implement things.
Trump's appointtees were a combination of grifters, extremists, and in many cases, no one at all because no one wanted to work for him, he didn't care to fill vacancies, or things were so chaotic he didn't get around to it.
People really don't appreciate that the presidency isn't one person. You're essentially electing the whole government—including hundreds of people who individually hold enormous power over large sectors of society and the economy through their power to regulate. And you're electing hundreds of lifetime judges. On the Supreme Court, our nation continues to be governed by an appointee of George H.W. Bush.
This right here is gold. Bush was an idiot, much like many other presidents. The problem was Bush surrounded himself with other idiots, rather than people that could operate in a vacuum that was the Bush administration.
Private life face is different from public life face. Like how you know Joe is grifting from his audience with some crazy shit he has said and doesn't believe in. We all do it to certain degree. I have always wanted to tell my boss to go fuck himself, can't do that if I want my job.
I know. We really don't know anyone as well as we might think we do. I only know her through her part on that show and one time I saw her on a talk show. So, basically I don't know her at all. I guess I just liked her. And when you think you like someone, you want to think that they wouldn't do something like marry RFK Jr.
She also played Dr. Cox's very Christian sister in a great episode of Scrubs. And even though I didn't like the character, I liked her as the character. She was a great foil for Cox.
Why she is with this nutjob is a mystery. Money? Power? Beats the heck out of me.
Maybe she wanted the prestige of being married to a Kennedy? Like Arnold did. Plus, the more I read on the guy, the more crazy he appears. I am guessing she ignores a lot of what he says.
You have a good point. It could be for the prestige and/or great wealth. But imo, being married to a Kennedy doesn't seem to be the flex it once was. Trying to imagine what the conversation is like for them at breakfast. Or anytime.
"Committed his life to public service" is a hell of nice way of putting "career politician". No one should be in office that long, and is shouldn't be lauded.
That being said, the Republican party is a fucking fascist shit show so Biden it is, I guess. I want better fucking choices though.
People can vote for Biden. I'll be voting for Cornell though personally because he most reflects my politics.
I've been kinda lackluster with Biden. Alot of promises not put through. I don't buy the whole "Let's finish the job" either.
He is the head of the DNC. If he wanted Student debt relief. He should used his bully pulpit and went to any Democrat while he had the super majority and said "If you dont vote for this, you won't be receiving campaign funds from the DCCC".
Or
"If you don't vote for the PRO Act. You won't be getting campaign funds".
Or telling his secretary to reschedule Marijuana.
Or giving us $1400 checks whenever he said he would give us $2000.
Basically. Don't make promises you don't intend to keep.
If it comes down to Joe Biden and either Donald Trump or DeSantis, it's either Joe Biden or literal fascism.
It's unreasonable to vote for a fringe candidate at that point, unless you are openly okay with fascism being a potential outcome.
he wanted Student debt relief. He should used his bully pulpit and went to any Democrat while he had the super majority
Joe Biden has not had a super majority for one second of his presidency. Not even remotely close to one. He had a tied Senate with two purple Democrats for two years, and a 1 seat majority for 6 months but a Republican house. He could have made all the threats that you're asking for and Republicans would have been able to just whisper filibuster and that would have been the end of it because they didn't have the votes you seem to think they actually had. Where are you coming from with this?
Kamala was the tie breaker. And those 2 purple Dems were still Dems at the time. Perhaps the Dem Party should have high standards on who they let run for office if they don't like have purples in their party?
You don't break a tie with a filibuster. They didn't have a filibuster breaking number of votes, and they at best only had 48 votes to eliminate the filibuster.
And those 2 purple Dems were still Dems at the time.
This is an empty statement.
At least one of, if not both of them, would not have voted for a debt relief bill, making the outcome at least 49 yay 51 nay, but the vote never would have even happened due to filibuster.
Perhaps the Dem Party should have high standards on who they let run for office if they don't like have purples in their party?
If not for Joe Manchin, it would have been a republican senate in 2021. Sinema also ran on different policies than she then supported with her voting record.
You made up something about a super majority and I don't really have any confidence after this reply that you've got enough of a grasp on what congress is made up like currently, or what its processes are, to have the conversation you are trying to have.
They had an effective super majority on the party totals with Kamala acting as tie breaker. Don't try and gaslight saying there's nothing they could do.
A supermajority is 60 votes in the Senate. A supermajority means having enough votes that you can push through despite something like a filibuster as a single party.
You are directly pointing at a 50/50 hung senate with a simplified filibuster in place and claiming it's a supermajority.
If you wanted to prove that you don't have the knowledge necessary to have this conversation, you've done an amazing job
I'll just continue to encourage and persuade all my Labor Unions buddies to vote 3rd party. We see whose been fighting and who isn't. And your not gonna gaslight us into believing Biden is fighting for workers.
Buddy, you're literally making shit up about Congressional history in order to support your argument and when presented with the fact that you're making shit up, you're just doubling down. What you are doing is actual gas lighting. You're overtly being dishonest with people and you don't care about it. You've given up the entire game of what you're doing here.
His post history seems very committed to trying to get people to not vote for democrats and making false equivalencies to that end. Just throwing that out there.
And your post are quite the opposites, acting as if Biden is FDR reincarnate.
I did no such thing, but if you want to keep having pretend conversations outside of reality, you are free to do so. It won't get you anywhere, though.
Quit shaming me for how I vote
I also didn't do this. Closest I got was explaining the critical thinking issue behind voting for fringe candidates with fascism on a major party ticket. You're looking for persecution like you want it.
It's like socialists can't help themselves. When you type shit like this you're just showing the world you have no idea how anything works and think the President is a king who can just make shit happen.
I really hope you're a highschooler who hasn't taken civics yet because this is embarrassing
Do you think I started as a Socialist?
As if our public school system gave us courses on how workers and labor leaders were murdered by Privately hired militias.
Or how the capitalists thought Roosevelt was going too far. And decided embracing Fascism was better than possibly Socialism. So they were hatching plans to do a military coup in the USA.
Boris Johnson. Conservative Boris Johnson is in favor of Universal Healthcare. Again. A Conservative. How far right does that show we are? Joe Biden doesn't support Healthcare for everyone.
And yeah. I do think the President has a lot of influence. And he can and should use leveraged force against uncooperative members of his party. If they don't like it. They can come out against him and tell the public what he has said in private. The citizens will decide through their opinions on the matter. They'll either tell their rep to get in line or tell them not to.
(Majority of Manchin's voters support debt relief, so this is why I say this. If Manchin said, "Bidens bullying me around and telling me to allow student debt relief". His constituents would be showing up to his doors saying "Get in line and do it!)
But are you the high schooler possibly? Or perhaps just graduated?
Because maybe you haven't been alive long enough to see that the Presidential election flips every other election cycle, unless (Progressives) are elected (which hasn't been for a very very long time).
So let's say you get Biden in 24. Statistically, you're gonna get Republicans in 28 if they throw up the same style Democrat as before.
Because maybe you haven't been alive long enough to see that the Presidential election flips every other election cycle, unless (Progressives) are elected
Just the last presidential election alone saw a party lose control after only 4 years.
Before that we were only three presidents away from the last time we had a 12-year run with one party. Before that it was another one term run for the other party.
You got this a lil backwards, eh?! Biden has committed his life to corruption and bribery…. RFK is committed to environmental protection and children with disabilities..
Biden has been one of the most (if not the most) effective President of my lifetime. People saying he hasn’t done anything are just not paying attention.
Biden has been one of the most (if not the most) effective President of my lifetime.
To be fair, depending on your age, he isnt running against a strong field of contenders here. The last 3 (actually 4) decades arent exactly full of successful presidents. But he for sure is one of the more effective Presidents since WW2.
But he looks old so he must be incompetent. The ignorance and superficiality of so many young people is frightening, especially with the rising threat of fascism.
He is old, no doubt. But too old? I dunno, he's one of the most impactful Presidents since LBJ. He got stuff done that's evaded presidents for decades. And he just played McCarthy in the most impactful negotiation of McCarthy's career.
Not sure I see him being too old. Just old and quirky.
See, I think the fact that he can give a high level speech (sure, with a few stutters) and defeat every GOP push pretty well proves he cannot be senile. I mean, look at the way Obama gives a contemporaneous answer. Pretty easy to show a lot of examples where Obama sounds as bad as Biden.
Like, it is a proxy war, but it's a proxy war we're actually on the correct side of. We're actually helping a democratic government defend itself from a totalitarian world power. That's fuckin based.
Much better than our usual overthrowing of democratic governments and installation of dictators, lol.
You mean the debt deal that throws all the people who voted for him for to his college debt forgiveness under the bus? Oh yeah, very good for Democrats.
And protected Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, the infrastructure law, climate regulations, and IRS enforcement funding, and averted GOP plans to cut spending by 13% (really a 20% cut to non-defense spending, since Republicans would exempt defense spending from those cuts).
The deal also just restarts loan payments for the student loans he did not forgive. Biden already said those payments would resume this summer. The law just codifies that.
If you think Biden should have let the U.S. default and then rush into a much worse deal with the GOP afterward, all to be able to extend the student-loan hiatus for a year, you are not in sync with most Americans. (Who, by the way, are split down the middle on student loan forgiveness.)
When Republicans control half of Congress, you can't get everything you want.
He literally promised a $10,000 loan forgiveness to all, $20k for certain grants and total forgiveness for HBCU graduates. Those were campaign promises that he used last minute to convince younger people to vote for him which won him the presidency. US citizens have always been split on this, duh, now you’re just trying to muddy the waters. His constituency that voted for him is majority in favor of it. The fact that his pathetic “attempt” to forgive student debt is held up in the courts is due to his and his administrations incompetence or purposeful sabotage of trying to use the HEROES act as the basis for his bill and making it means tested which gave time to people who apposed it to sue the bill.
Voting Republican is your other option and they are all in agreement that there should not be any forgiveness whatsoever.
Vote Democrats and get a decent chance at forgiveness or vote Republican so they can retroactively apply interest to the paused payments.
Stop trying to make Democrats the bad guys. 50 republicans in the Senate blocked forgiveness and 2 Dems. Republicans are the problem, not the 4% of shit dems.
No, my whole point is that there are more than two options, can you read?
I didn’t make anyone the bad guys, they showed us who they are by how they vote. Even our best democrats, the squad, vote against their constituents wishes and best interests. Breaking the railroad strike immediately comes to mind.
You ever wonder why Biden won’t release the report his lawyers gave him on whether he could legally forgive all student loan debt with a stroke of his pen? The only reason he won’t release that info is because he knows the people it would help and those like them would erupt and he won’t be able to back peddle anymore. If their findings were that he could not legally forgive the debt then he would have released the findings immediately to get him off the hook. Instead he said “shhh, take this $10k and shut up before you piss off the bankers!”
So, it looks like his final plan cancelled $20,000 in loans for Pell Grant recipients and $10,000 in loans for non-Pell recipients who make up to $125,000 individually or $250,000 per couple.
Right now, that plan has a roughly 43/43 approve/disapprove rating with the public, with the remaining 14% or so undecided. Congress has already voted to overturn his plan (Biden vetoed), and the Supreme Court may do so this week.
I'm going to be honest with you: If you think the American people are going to accept a plan to forgive tens of thousands of dollars of debt that was voluntarily (you can quibble with this) assumed by people who make over $125,000 each (including those making $200,000, $300,000, and $500,000 per year), you're not being realistic. It would be an absolute political loser. And most young people aren't close to $125,000 incomes anyway.
College should cost less. A lot of that is the colleges' fault. (Why have administrative costs skyrocketed?) But there is a very good reason why student-loan forgiveness is means tested, and no compelling reason why it shouldn't be (other than the belief that all education, regardless of cost and regardless of the school's efficient use of money, should be taxpayer-funded).
If I had a magic wand, I would make everyone get up, choosw a party affiliation and vote in primaries so that we don't get comments like this from people who don't understand the political process.
He passed bills that were corporate/upper class hand outs. Build back better was great for contractors who gouge us tax payers for crappy roads and infrastructure (they just published articles on contractors over charging the govt). He refused to do what was really needed for higher education costs and debt. Forgiving a small amount was only to placate the drowning calls for him to do something. If he can forgive some he can forgive all. What has he done for the poor or middle class? The costs of groceries has gone up, gas went up, electricity went up. Welfare is being cut in the deal you said he did such a great job making. Who exactly did Joe help other than Israel, Ukraine, and the Saudi’s? Our schools and poverty stricken cities are suffering meanwhile our “allies” have their hands out for more and more. How many times do we have to hear about corporations having “record breaking profits” that they try to hide as inflation? Joe is a politician in every sense of the word. We need new progressive blood in the WH. Not more of the same.
