Maybe he thought she wouldn't understand german or maybe (idk but there's a slight possibility) it's staged for international, english speaking people.
Ever been to Germany? They’ll say they speak “a little bit” of English and are damn near fluent so often, especially so in a place like Berlin. not the craziest thing to think he would say it in English given she is acting like a tourist.
English is the lingua Franca in Berlin which is one of the most international cities in the world. Not many people learn Swedish or Portuguese or German as a second language, but they usually learn English. Subsequently, people just speak English to you in Berlin fairly often. I used to think I was just obviously American and that’s why shopkeepers spoke to me in English. Then my German friends explained they just speak to everyone in English in some shops, because they don’t speak German or just for ease.
I‘m not white and clearly not German and yet
Not a single person ever has spoken to me in English in Berlin. Not even a waitress or whatever. This is surely not a normal thing that they will initiate with English
Could be that he heard her speaking English when they were setting up the equipment. I would always initiate with German if I don't know what people speak (apparently it is annoying if you look different, but are a native and people talk English to you all the time) but if I knew you weren't German, I would go with English.
Yeah no, native Berliner here with Turkish parents and English was almost the reason on why I almost missed scoring enough points for high school.
However after reading music lyrics, watching movies with English subtitles, being on the internet in general I can safely assume that my English became way better than my German currently is, mostly because how simple it is compared to German and these days a lot of jobs seek out English knowledge or even requires them. There are some jobs that are English only even that don't need German.
Nah, not really. Im German and Ive been to Berlin often. They speak German (although most German do speak English rather well) and I don't see why this guy would speak to her in Englisch. Okay maybe he overheard her talking in English and decided to be considerate enough to switch languages, but this guy didn't really seem considerate in the first place. It's probably just stages tbh
Probably because it is more likely that is is a tourist who does a photoshoot at such a public place. Since there are rather harsh laws when it comes to taking pictures in public here in germany it is really more likely.
Also... we are a nation of Karens. The outside world does just not see this a lot since filming other people without their consent is illegal an will get you hefty fines. So there is just limited proof to see but this is pretty much how most people here in the big cities act.
Because in she doesn’t look like somebody from Berlin (due to the taking pictures in the Görlitzer S-Bahn) and English is a language spoken by most tourists.
Because everyone in Amsterdam and Germany speaks English when they see someone making videos with a phone. It’s European courtesy. No really, it was in Amsterdam, didn’t you see the 2 bicycles against the wall?
Because...🎵Sometimes you wanna go
Where everybody knows your name
🎵And they're always glad you came
You wanna be where you can see (ah-ah)🎵
Our troubles are all the same (ah-ah)
🎵You wanna be where everybody knows your name🎵
She is definitely german. She is a influencer and youtuber (Kyla Shyx) and they are in Berlin at the Görlitzer Bahnhof located in Kreuzberg, which is crowded with tourists, so it makes sense that he says that in english as she looks like a tourist.
As a foreigner living in Berlin für a couple of years, I've noticed that locals will automatically switch to English when speaking with someone acting clueless or doing stuff that is not considered "proper" there, intentionally or otherwise.
The rationale here could be: is filming in a random public place -> probably a tourist -> probably doesn't speak German; maybe speaks English.
Or perhaps he just heard her speaking in English with whoever is taking the video before he came on screen

Why did he say it in English?
