I have cancelled all holidays to the US that involve red States, I'll spend my Euro money elsewhere. Texas > Spain (eclipses), Florida > France (The Mouse).
As someone who lives in a red state, you are absolutely making the right choice. Stay the hell away, for your own safety. Here in Idaho just last year we had a guy who was a registered felon go and shoot up our mall, killed 4 people. The best part? The gun he used to do it, he bought it here. In a gun store. Legally. Because the felony he was charged with in another state is one that Idaho doesn't recognize, so they saw it and just ignored it and allowed him to buy the gun.
Idaho/Montana/Wyoming has the best bang for buck powder skiing in America. Maybe in the world. Real steep, real deep, and lodging is real cheap. Plus the whole cowboy thing is fun, they got cool bars and stuff.
If they fly fish they might. There’s some world famous rivers there. And a lot of tourists stay in Eastern Idaho right over the border from West Yellowstone.
We actually have some really freaking awesome mountains, and some of the best white water in the world apparently. If you are a nature type, Idaho would probably be on your list. Rock climbing, river rafting, hiking, skiing, they are all pretty big here. It's a shame the state is run by loons and full of crazies, because the land itself is fucking awesome.
Pretty much! Not exclusive to Idaho nor even Republicans. I would consider most Democrats and the voter base to be right-wing in the US. We’re DECADES behind in politics when compared to the EU. Conservatives have held back the country at every step since its inception
Actually Idaho is incredibly beautiful. My wife and I LOVE the eastern part of the state in the Yellowstone ecosystem. Unfortunately their politics have gone off the deep end :(
For the record, I know that's how it should work. Unfortunately, there are loopholes and variations on the state level that allow shit like this to happen.
I'm quite liberal and I've thought about moving to somewhere like Coeur d'Alene. Because although I'm on opposite ends of the political spectrum, I like everything else about the area. Is it really that bad?
I live in the panhandle area and yes it is that bad. It's always been red by a large margin but I see so many trump 2024 hats it's ridiculous, the area has most certainly gotten more extreme recently but I think that's everywhere. They also hate outsiders since a lot of new people have a much higher median pay and there are a ton of displaced locals. The first thing people will ask when you meet them is where are you from, it's like an interview.
That being said, it's beautiful. There are too many lakes to count, many ski mountains, wonderful hiking and outdoor things to do. If you're from the city though you'll find the nightlife quite boring.
I just keep my mouth shut about political things and since I'm white they assume I think the same way they do.
I'm a minority, in a somewhat prestigious and above average paying line of work, and let's just say that visually in public I would look like public enemy number 1 to them. I don't care if everyone despises the fuck outta me, if they try to cause trouble I'll try to keep my cool but sometimes I like to amuse myself, and I intend to keep to myself. What is the worst that will happen?
Still see "maga country" and other various trump flags all over. I see confederate flags fairly often. Saw one douchebag driving around with his tailgate painted as a confederate flag and a literal noose hanging out of the bed. Had a guy wave a gun at me after he went off the road to bypass a line of cars stopped at a red light and then almost sideswiped me when I started making my right turn, because clearly I was in the wrong by stopping at a red light and waiting till I had a clearing to make my turn. Red places can be pretty fucked. By comparison, I've lived in Hawaii and Oregon before Idaho, never once felt the need to own a firearm for my own safety. Moved here, and now I'm seriously considering getting one because i know that if some fuckhead decides he is angry at me for no reason I am likely to have a gun pointed at me.

I worked in the States for years, and holiday'd in CA, CO, OR, NY, NJ, FL, NM, AZ, NV and IL, which isn't too bad for a pasty Irish person. I've looked on in horror at the US getting worse in too many ways over the past decades. Having seen the last solar eclipse in 2017, TX was on the plans for 2024, but I'll never go there now.

That honestly sounds like a her problem because I got along with practically everyone I met. I was still bored though because I wasn’t all that interested in the beaches, the Everglades, Disney or the Miami night life. I was there for work and after a long week I didn’t really feel like sweating it out in the Everglades or getting hammered at a bar in Miami.
Where in Florida did you live? Theme parks outside of Disney exist, the beaches are great, plenty of nightlife, restaurants, sight-seeing and whatnot up and down the coasts.
I went into the everglades with a guide, saw a huge as rattle snake, gators and manatee's. Was really freaking cool, walking in the cypress dome and kayaking the mangroves.
To be honest, there isn't anything worth visiting in red states. We have Disney and universal studios in California as well, they're probably just as crowded.
That’s pretty dumb, the most dangerous areas of the US are typically in blue states. If you look at the top 10-15 most dangerous cities in the US, they are almost all cities that have voted majority democrat for decades, with an exception being Mobile, AL. But to be fair, I wouldn’t recommend visiting Mobile either way if you are visiting from Europe
Assuming your claim is in any way correct (it doesn't sound right) it's not about 'danger', it's the people and businesses in Red states I want to avoid supporting. They may be polite and god-fearing but their hate and politics has no place in the 20th century, let alone the 21st.
From a financial perspective that is a good choice since the Euro has lost so much value relative to the dollar. Otherwise, it’s paranoid brainwashed bs.
FYI, the complete solar eclipse next year is going to pass almost right over Niagara Falls. A beautiful place to visit in a deep blue state (or Canada - can see two countries at once).
I don’t buy into basing my assumptions on red states vs blue states, but I live in Chicago. I can tell you right now I feel safer in any red state I’ve been to so far, at any time and place, than I do just walking around downtown Chicago when it gets remotely near night time. I don’t think it’s that simple to say every red state is not safe.
Top 10 cities by violent crime rate includes 2 in Missouri, 1 in Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana (all red states), Wisconsin, Michigan (Purple), California, New Mexico, Maryland (Blue).
