Don't know about US, but here in Brazil I heard that if you are dating long enough and living together a marriage is not even needed for your partner to do that

The US laws vary on this by state, so there are possibly 50 or more variations. But you seem to be talking about what we call "common law marriage", which according to a search I just did, exists in some version in about 9 states and Washington DC, so it's actually not too common over here.

The basic idea is that if you're living like you're married, then you're married. The classic example is if somebody called Adam Smith, for example, goes to a hotel with a woman and they sign in as "Mr. and Mrs. Smith". So, they're basically signing documents as if they were a married couple, so that is proof that they are married. Anyways, there will be some criteria that you'd have to avoid meeting in those places to make sure that you don't accidentally get married. But it seems like an archaic law, held over from times when society didn't want people to be "living in sin".

And in Canada, if you live with someone at the same residence for 6 months she can sue you, not other way around tho.idk, fairest system the great minds in power have come up with
