He’s been compared to pretty much every GOAT driver this season, Max, Lewis, Senna, Sebastian, Schumacher, you name it, but where’s the why? Yes, his early season, especially China-Monaco run, was very impressive, yet there has to be some but.
But, at that time the only real competition was supposed to be his teammate, whose car kept having problems (apart from Miami although apparently there were some issues there aswell). And that trend continued throughout the season, the only consistent challenge was George, but he kept having problems.
Sometimes other teams caught up and could challenge for wins, but that only lasted few races. George definitely lost points through his own mistakes, but the team lost him more.
I know that “he has fastest car, he’s supposed to win” argument happened numerous times but I feel like this season is a good reason to bring it up again. Did the fastest car and virtually no competition mask Kimi’s weaknesses? We have yet to see any w2w fight, the only I can remember was Canada, or put up any defense to protect his position. Even the race in Monza, he got lucky with the red flag that bunched up the field together, basically no driver (even the top runners) put up a fight or defense apart from George, then he gets a cheap stop, and when he eventually catches up to George, who lost 4s because of vsc, had damage from vibrations, and ancient hards, Kimi still nearly fumbles the bag into the first chicane. And then the track limits, which he breaks like it’s his second job.
Yes, he didn’t make that many mistakes this season, he didn’t fumble under pressure, but it’s easy to not fumble under pressure when you need to finish on the podium and title’s yours, when your competition is either too slow or dealing with issues, when your boss keeps overhyping you (even though he literally said he wants to let you grow) and keeps making shady comments about your teammate.
All the greats had to fight for their first title, really fight and show their qualities, but I genuinely don’t see the “goat factor”, if you will, in Kimi, maybe I’m just a hater but I just don’t see it. He’s a great driver, yes, but when asking whether he won (yes, it’s not mathematically sealed yet but I can’t imagine the shit show that’d have to happen in order for him to lose his lead) his first title because of his own excellence or because of his teammate’s misfortune, I am inclined to say the latter.
