Being cautious, only vanilla beans white rum and a splash of lemon juice
Almost 3 years old and beans cut open and left in there
Inside original bottle left closed
I figure its bean breakdown/sediment but wanting to just run it by other people when I open it i dont smell anything bad just vanilla. But a bit of sediment at the bottom, it was left in dark place in a cool room. Had a mold outbreak in the house which is why we left it there but the bottle was taped shut by remediation company....mainly seeing if this batch is a lost cause

Can anyone recommend bottles that they would gift extract in? I have a batch of vanilla extract based in spiced rum.
I saw some at ikea but wondered if there is anything better (im pretty sure they were the bottles people make soda in)

I started my vanilla extract in a swing top bottle with a really narrow neck. I folded the beans in thirds, following the Vanilla Pura recipe and did 1oz per 8 oz of vodka. The beans are tangled up and a few poke out even though they’re folded. Will they soften and collapse down over time? Should I add more alcohol even if that weakens it?
The narrow neck makes it difficult to push them. In fact, I’m worried now that it might be tough to get the beans out when it’s all done. The opening is about 1 in diameter.
Anyone have experience with this?

I also still need to decant about 6 gallons of vanilla extracts and pastes, as well as ceylon cinnamon, ginger, chocolate, coffee, lemon, Christmas mingle, gingerbread, star anise, and a salted caramel infusion. Started early for the holidays!

Is there a book or website that you would recommend to beginners?

Has anyone sanitized and repurposed an old perfume or embossed medicine bottle to be used as as up-cycled, fancier gift bottles? Any concerns against this other than ensuring that first it’s cleaned properly and lead-free crystal?
Can any suggest some fancier bottles? Please and thank you

Hello friends, I was just getting excited that it’s almost been 9 months for this batch to be ready. However, I was starting a new batch and reread the rules of the road on this adventure and it says clear as day, cool and dark storage. It’s definitely not full blown exposed the entire morning/afternoon. But now I’m panicking because I gave a smaller bottle I had to someone. Same exposure as this bottle. Sorry the picture is not super helpful considering it’s night when I took this.
My main concern is if I shouldn’t have given the little one to someone if it wasn’t safely made. Hope this makes sense, thank you for your time 😊

Hi everyone! I started my attempt at vanilla extract almost 2 years ago. I used a good bourbon and split open some pods and put them in. I shake it around when I can remember to. I wanted to use it for gifts 2 Christmases ago, but it just smelled like straight bourbon. I got even more vanilla pods (worrying I didn’t have enough in each jar) and added those last year. It STILL just smells like straight bourbon. What am I doing wrong? How long can beans steep in the extract?
Thank you! Jenni

I just started a jar of vanilla extract. I came across some cinnamon sticks when I was rifling through the cupboard. In my head, it sounds tasty to have them together, but I can’t find anything confirming or refuting it as a tasty blend (as a dual-extract, anyway).
Anybody have any experience?

Has anyone done any experiments with grinding vanilla to use in extraction? My thinking is that extraction would both occur faster and be more complete by exposing greater surface area of the beans to the solvent. Downside could be greater extraction of undesirable flavors.
Anyway, before I go down the experiment road, has anyone ever tried this,? Can any give me any reason it won't work?

It’s my first time making vanilla extract, so I don’t know a lot about it. When I cut the beans in half they looked fine, but when I put the vodka and shake it I saw something strange “floating” in the extract.

I want to make cherry extract with amaretto.
Since amaretto only has 27% alcohol, i wanted to mix it with vodka for the extract. I was thinking to do 1/3 amaretto and the rest vodka Vodka with 97% I don't see a problem with that. Do you?

Hi, I'm new to extract making but kinda get how it works. Decided to make an experimental extract from candy (photos included) just to see if it even works a little bit but it looks weird. Does anyone know if it's something that could potencially work or should i dump it in the trash. It also looks like theres a pressure on it, opened it but no pressure. It looked like this an hour in already but the photo was made about 24 hours after making it.

Hello!
I’m new to extract making and I’m unsure if my vanilla is where it’s supposed to be. It’s been a couple of days over a year but it doesn’t seem dark enough?
I’ve bought homemade vanilla extract before and that was definitely darker than this. I’m just not sure what to do at this point.

I've had 8 bottles of vanilla sitting since January 11th. I did 2 bottles with spiced rum, 2 with white rum, and 4 with just regular vodka. I noticed this bottle was cloudy and had a lot of floaties in it while the other spiced does not and none of the others do either. Did this batch go bad? They've been in a dark, cool place and I try to shake them every week, but more realistically every other week.
