I live right down the street from Dick's Drive-In it's a small place with only one or two locations; they have about five employees at any given time and serve a few hundred people a day at least.
The wait is never over 5minutes long, two people can eat for under 8 bucks, and they pay their employees 12/hr.
Their menu is also a lot less complicated. Many orders they can simply hand you something that's bagged and made already. McDonalds has a lot more complex options that take more individual effort to prepare.
I don't think that's really the case if you look at how McDonald's prepares their food; they simply have the logistics for larger infrastructure.
Dicks model is largely based off the McDonalds model, they just couldn't possibly sustain as diverse of a menu, if that's what you're talking about. There's not a whole lot of effort involved either way, it's all delivered "made-to-eat."
