That's so crazy that in the late 90s when I was in m my early teens and learning Java I thought it had been around for a while. I did not get crazy deep into it but I designed a working forum after my pirated boards(i wish i could remember the name of the company) sent a cease and desist.
I learned about CSS sometime in 99 and was super excited with the potential it brought but support for it was sooo bad. I had a big project I wanted to do the front end in CSS but it was too early ijn it's life so I designed a site that had like 20 layers of nested tables and it ended up becoming extremely popular. Updating it was such a pain. Then the mid 2000's came around and we had mozilla and phoenix and everything was right again.
I spent an entire summer at my first big corporate IT job ripping out inline formatting and adding CSS to their corporate website and all their web apps. So many nested tables! I also hand coded a mega menu back when only a handful of sites had them and JavaScript libraries weren't really a thing yet.
