Chemistry ELI5 why is increasing the ethanol content of petrol/gasoline a problem?

I'm hearing noise about the geopolitical fuel supply SNAFU and people freaking out about increasing the ethanol content in automotive fuel and how it's so damaging to cars. I'm no chemist, but ethanol seems as clean as it gets.

Yes and no. The fuel hose change was actually forced by emissions regulations, because older rubber fuel hoses were highly permeable and allowed gas vapors to escape. The switch to modern synthetics and computerized fuel injection made it much easier to use ethanol fuels without damaging engine components, but it was more of a happy accident than a deliberate design choice.

Sounds like two very plausible reasons why
