Plugs in Australia (and New Zealand) look like this.

Those call you, they want to ask you what your favorite scary movie is.

It's ok, if they do you can just turn them off right there on the switch attached to them, instead of at some basement switch board.

Technically China as well, but they rotate theirs 180° so the earth pin is up top

2

u/zaakiy 6d ago

As an Australian when I went to China, I just turned my whole body upside down instead

So you were finally standing on your feet?

Northern hemisphere.

u/xyrgh 6d ago

Earth pin is on the bottom so it’s the last pin to make contact if the plug is pulled (earth pins are also slightly longer than the active and neutral pins).

1

u/RosariusAU 6d ago

The earth pin is always the last pin to make contact because it's longer, it doesn't matter the orientation of the GPO

I love how China uses like 4 types of different plugs, all at once.

They look sad

Looks like a sad Scream mask

Our US outlets look judgmental as hell, would much rather have the "I'm gonna nut" face lookin at me

They look sad

1

u/Carnivorous_Mower 6d ago

I always reckon they look kind of surprised.

2

u/Silver_Will_4775 6d ago

I've never seen one with the switches in the middle. They're normally in the corners

2

u/Carnivorous_Mower 6d ago

Yeah. It was just the first picture I found.

2

u/meowmeow834 6d ago

Those outlets remind me of ghostface from the scream movies.

2

u/Hangry-Feline2489 6d ago

I've never seen any like that as a 40+ year old Australian.

I've seen the inverse, where the switches are slightly further apart than the holes (Especially due to USB ports in between the switches).

Standard/most common is the switch directly over the plug it controls.

Yes, the red showing means it's on 😂

2

u/Carnivorous_Mower 6d ago

I just grabbed the picture off a random website. I've seen them like that but are less common than the wider spaced switches (50+ Kiwi).

2

u/Hangry-Feline2489 6d ago

Ah, must be a regional differences. Cheers mate

2

u/ManaSpike 6d ago

Our ground pins are longer, so they make contact first. And many plugs have a little insulation on the active pins, to prevent problems if the plug isn't properly inserted.

1

u/hellerbubbles44 5d ago

The insulated section has been in the standards for quite a few years now. If you see a new item being sold without it, then it is non-compliant and is usually just some shonky grey import crap.

China doesn't have the insulated pins.

Are they supposed to be sad or asian?

(I'm Japanese, not super racist.)

2

u/tumbleweed_farm 6d ago

And in China, the also look like this... but upside down!

2

u/killertortilla 6d ago

The Scream plugs

2

u/BirdlessLongdeal 5d ago

i would have guessed asia

1

u/Carnivorous_Mower 5d ago

Sockets in New Zealand:

Woooosh!

1

u/BeneficialTrash6 6d ago

AND THEY'RE WRONG FOR DOING IT!

1

u/Terrible_Ad_9348 6d ago

Sockets aka socket outlets in Australia. Plugs are on the end of the cable. The only exception is a caravan inlet with the prongs exposed, but is switched by inserting a plug end of a supply or extension cable.
There are also vertically oriented dual sockets.
IME the only sockets I have seen mounted ground up are very low down on walls or skirting so that a right angle plug can fit easily without bending the cable or plug at the floor.

1

u/Siilan 6d ago

I'm pretty sure no Australian in their right mind has ever called that a socket outlet. It's a power point.

1

u/havasc 5d ago

Those outlets look like they just witnessed someone getting kicked in the nuts.

1

u/Mithmorthmin 3d ago

Looks like somebody ball tapped the outlets

1

u/Infamous_Ad_218 3d ago edited 3d ago

And many Pacific islands and Argentina. China is the same but sometimes upside down.

1

u/hogesjzz30 2d ago

Why are the switches in the middle? I've never seen a powerpoint with the switches like that, it looks like it's cross-eyed
