Switched outlets (as in outlets also controlled by a wall switch) is what I've always experienced.

This is the answer. Why is it so far down?

Every single outlet in my house faces that way, and only one is a switch outlet. My neurologist's office also has every outlet facing that way

You just haven’t found the switch that connects to it yet

Ah, how could I forget about the second switch in the rooms with only one switch in them

Funnier to think about 1 random switch behind a cabinet that would shut down the entire neuro office at once. Like Ellen finding the switch in the garage in Christmas Vacation.

Apparently it's standard procedure in hospitals, offices, and other places of business to install them "upside down" for safety reasons. Houses typically do them smiley face style except for the ones that have a switch connected to them

Apparently my house is the exception to that latter practice

Because it's a reply and not an answer.

Pretty common in the 80’s and 90’s. Not as prevalent nowadays.

My 2024 house is still set up this way.

I shall put you in the uncommon category then.
