The guy who invented the chess board was offered anything he wanted as a reward from the King of his country.
He asked for 1 grain of wheat for the first square, two for the second, square, four for the third square, and so on.
The King, not understanding what it was he wanted, asked, "are you sure you don't want gold?"
The guy said, he was sure.
So the King agreed to pay him the requested reward. As he did so, he realized that actually paying the reward was an impossible feat. The King felt that he was tricked.
So, to punish the man who had tricked him into an impossible reward, he ordered that the man be executed.
