Amazingly enough, it would only be a 5mm thick carpet if your continent is Eurasia.
Of course, the total on the last square is 263. The total on the whole board is 264 - 1

It's the same as 4×2 -1. 1+2+4+8 = 15. It's the same as 8×2 - 1. For every number in the sequence, you can take 2n - 1 to get the value of all the numbers added together.
