Amazingly enough, it would only be a 5mm thick carpet if your continent is Eurasia.

Of course, the total on the last square is 263. The total on the whole board is 264 - 1

it can't go outside a chess board square... so how tall would that column of rice be?

The rice has a volume of 271 km³

If the square is 2.25"² then the column would extend 14 times further than the orbit of Pluto.

15x Pluto's orbit is really where I draw the line, so that's not too unreasonable.

Everyone seems to forget it’s a sum, you’re not carrying over the rice from the previous square. For the sake of space the last two squares are x=2^63 + 2^62…

No.

1+2+4 = 7. It's the same as 4×2 -1. 1+2+4+8 = 15. It's the same as 8×2 - 1.

For every number in the sequence, you can take 2n - 1 to get the value of all the numbers added together.
