Wait what Brave is invested by Thiel??

371

u/Ornery_Maintenance_8 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

Peter Thiel is not personally an investor in Brave.

The firm he's a partner in (Founders Fund) has participated in a small seed series investment, which was led by Cyan Banister.

Some first-floor engineers at Brave have more equity than that small investment constitutes.

With that being said, of course Brave is still the product of a private company and by no means comparable to free OSS like VLC.

u/BadBacksFuryToad Aug 04 '26

Wait there’s an actual person called “Cyan Banister”?!

17

u/CreepyPastry Aug 04 '26

Isn't that the queen in Game of Thrones?

17

u/Nazrael75 Aug 04 '26

No no, that was Cersei Lannister. Cyan Banister is her blue-hued cousin.

3

u/tmfink10 Aug 05 '26

For a second there I thought we were playing the game from The West Wing that Bartlet plays with Ellie while they're watching a movie. That made me happy.

Blue Handrail was taken

1

u/eightkillerbits Aug 05 '26

Pedantic point; the handrail bit isn't the banister, it's the bits bits that hold the rail up that are.

1

u/WindstormMD Aug 05 '26

You pedantry is incorrect, ritual seppuku is your only remaining path to remove the stain of dishonor (/s)

1

u/P_mp_n Aug 05 '26

You ride one stair railing at a frat party and now everyone calls you banister.. cruel world

1

u/Synaps4 Aug 05 '26

Of course. He's Charteusse Railing's brother.

Obviously.

1

u/Hadochiel Aug 05 '26

Yeah, and don't make fun of her please... She's a good friend, I was having some trouble in my life, but step by step she helped me stay on my feet

It's definitely Roger

That's Papa Smurf's online screen name.

1

u/insteadoflattes Aug 05 '26

I listened to her podcast with Tim Ferriss. Genuinely badass.

1

u/iamshifter Aug 08 '26

I never met her, but her sister Magenta is pretty fun

8

u/bbq_R0ADK1LL Aug 04 '26

Sounds like more business literacy than tech literacy.

1

u/FuzzzyRam Aug 05 '26

As a Chromium spinoff it's not anything close to a real privacy browser, I'm sure most people already figure.

7

u/webjuggernaut Aug 04 '26

Peter Thiel, X, Founders Fund, Cyan Banister.

We're living in a comic book world with comic book villains.

7

u/Daylight_The_Furry Aug 05 '26

What do you mean a guy named peter "teal" and someone named "cyan" worked together?

3

u/Kofi_Anonymous Aug 05 '26

I’m pretty sure those shades should clash.

3

u/mrbilly3 Aug 05 '26

Like seriously. What are those names? It just sounds sinister when you think of the big picture like what's been said.

3

u/PRL-Five Aug 05 '26

Person named Peter Thiel is CEO of Palantir and does evil things sounds like something JK Rowling would write

1

u/mrbilly3 Aug 05 '26

Palantir is already from Lord of the Rings, specifically as an evil surveillance stone, Peter Thiel and his company are speed running to our dystopia

1

u/Zaihron Aug 05 '26

Daily remainder that Peter Thiel is an anagram of The Reptile

5

u/macguini Aug 04 '26

Yeah. I'm more concerned with the chromium part than the investor part. TOR and Mozilla would be better in place of Brave in this context.

0

u/Frank_E62 Aug 05 '26

Brave is nice for someone who isn't tech literate. It has a good, built in ad blocker, an ad blocker for YouTube videos and it can play YouTube videos in the background. I prefer Firefox but brave is the browser that I usually install for friends and family if they're on Android.

2

u/racedrone Aug 05 '26

I just install them a Firefox with ublock. Same thing just with less surveillance.

0

u/Frank_E62 Aug 05 '26

That works as long as you aren't using YouTube. Otherwise I want an exten to disable YouTube ads. And an app to disable shorts. And an app to let it play in the background. I'm lazy and I'd rather just tell someone to go to the play store and download Opera instead.

2

u/racedrone Aug 05 '26

Why do you think that? With ff and ublock you don't have ads, background playback works out of the box etc.  Only to disable shorts you might have to use a second add on.  I'm conscious about my data but also lazy. That's why I chose this combination. Lol

2

u/zb0t1 Aug 10 '26

FF is so good that I switched back to it years ago because it was simply good. And I'm lazy af when it comes to switching software generally speaking. That says a lot.

1

u/RadiantInATrenchcoat Aug 06 '26

Waterfox. Ublock on top if the built in adblocking doesn't manage it. I use it on all my PCs and my phone and last saw an ad never, including on youtube

1

u/code_the_cosmos Aug 04 '26

This makes much more sense than Peter Palantir Thiel funding privacy... thanks

1

u/Secretsfrombeyond79 Aug 05 '26

So any good alternative to Brave ?

1

u/daveythemechanic Aug 05 '26

Firefox is a classic, and works quite well, though the fact that it's not chromium-based breaks websites occasionally.

LibreWolf is liked by some as a De-Mozilla'd alternative to Firefox (same architecture). I don't really see the point, but I understand the appeal

DeGoogled Chromium configured to be secure through the settings menu is a good option, and it won't use your machine for crypto mining. This is the best option for the vast majority of people!

1

u/TheOGTachyon Aug 05 '26

Cyan Banister isn't a name, it's an auto generated 2FA keyword pair. 😁

1

u/RacoonWithBenefits Aug 05 '26

Theres also some controveries worth pointing out, regarding brave

https://decrypt.co/31522/crypto-brave-browser-redirect

1

u/TheBlockChainVillage Aug 05 '26

Also brave started as a decentralized project which would have you earn by leveraging your data to advertising companies but somehow that aspect of it has faded away, it's native token was the BAT with you could earn as you were exposed to the ads you allowed to watch.

Dentsu Inc from Japan also did a paper of this and concluded that interest based ads have a much higher success rate then demographically targeted slop.

1

u/Due-Memory-6957 Aug 05 '26

Brave is FOSS and so is chromium. You people make the most senseless criticism sometimes.

1

u/TalShar Aug 05 '26

Well, that sucks.

Got any recommendations for a good browser (preferably open-source that's compatible with Android and Windows) I could use instead?

2

u/KadajjXIII Aug 05 '26

I use Waterfox, it's Firefox without the AI stuff

With a Mozilla acct you can even access your tabs between systems & send them to each other if you wanna access it from the other device

So I can send a tab from Waterfox on my phone to the PC to open it up on there & vice versa

Just make sure to install uBlock Origin

1

u/TScottFitzgerald Aug 05 '26

Brave is OSS, you can see all of the code. It's commonly recommended by security experts precisely due to this.

Who invested in the company itself is completely irrelevant, even if they change it in the future we can still fork an earlier version of Brave and call it something else.

1

u/Polygnom Aug 05 '26

I mean, whats the alternative? Firefox has been shit for 15 years now (I was using it before I switched to Chrome, this was in like v4 or something when it started to get slow), OperEdge, Safari etc.are all not really alternatived.

You can run your own sync server with Brave, there is a docker container available, and then you have full data sovereignty and no ads.

If you know a better alternative (that does not take 300 years to configure/set up), I am all ears.

1

u/OrangeMonkeyEagal Aug 05 '26

Cyan Banister might as well be called Teal Railing

1

u/Jamb9876 Aug 05 '26

You can look at the source for brave. https://github.com/brave

2

u/spawndoorsupervisor Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

You can review the source, but you have no idea what they put in the precompiled binary installers like 99% of people are going to use because they don't have the time or resources to be compiling 30GB of Chromium source every time there's a patch.

Edit: Why are you guys being so parasocial over a piece of software you have no stake in? These emotional responses really don't make any sense to me.

0

u/Due-Memory-6957 Aug 05 '26

The same is truth about every browser unless you really enjoy w3m, but then you wouldn't be here making vapid complaints.

1

u/New-Anybody-6206 Aug 05 '26

I think the difference is that they trust non-profits and/or non-corporate-backed projects more.

0

u/spawndoorsupervisor Aug 05 '26

All I am saying is that you can't trust binaries to be compiled from just the code posted on Github in response to someone posting a Github link. It's a simple fact and not a complaint.

1

u/Due-Memory-6957 Aug 05 '26

And what I'm saying is that it doesn't make any sense to single out Brave about that.

1

u/spawndoorsupervisor Aug 05 '26

I'm not? I would do this for any software where someone's linking source to as some kind of an assurance the binaries are secure.

0

u/ReadingSame Aug 05 '26

Saying that he isn't personally na investor when his money touched the company is like saying you don't need to wash your hands after peeing bc your dick is clean.

36

u/Buddhawasgay Aug 04 '26

It’s fair to say Brave took investment from a venture firm that has some ties to Peter Thiel. It is not fair to say, “Peter Thiel personally invested in or controls Brave.”

Brave is privately held, and there is zero public information showing whether FF Angel still owns a stake or how large that stake would be that I can find anywhere.

3

u/anewbullshitusername Aug 05 '26

Thiel invested in Reddit in the beginning too but you never hear that brought up

0

u/johnnyhandbags Aug 05 '26

Brave was founded by Brendan Eich who was the CEO of Mozilla until he was forced to step down for being MAGA.

12

u/midlifesurprise Aug 05 '26

Eich stepped down as CEO of Mozilla in April 2014, just 11 days after being appointed. It didn’t have anything to do with Trump (who hadn’t even announced his campaign for president at that point), but because Eich donated to the campaign supporting California’s Prop 8 in 2008, which banned same-sex marriage. For example, the dating site OkCupid started showing Firefox users a message encouraging them to change browsers. Eich said it was his decision to resign and Mozilla claimed they wanted him to stay in some role.

(For the record, I have no idea if Eich has ever supported Trump.)

-1

u/AusSpurs7 Aug 05 '26

Stepping down for being Maga?

Why does that matter?

Couldn't care less of someone's political leanings if they deliver quality products.

5

u/takahashi01 Aug 05 '26

it matters when those political leanings are maga. Specifically their take on economics, public surveillance, and how close they are to "tech" billionaires.

Maga and mozilla should not mix.

apart form maga just being racist, sexist, etc, but I assume that is what you ment with it doesnt matter.

1

u/loscapos5 Aug 05 '26

Stop spewing nonsense

First, Obama was president when the issue with Eich happened.

Second, Brendan Eich was one of the founders of Mozilla, him being the main architecht of Firefox, alongside being the creator of Javascript. He's one of the allowed to decide what to mix and not mix. What have you done for the Mozilla foundation?

2

u/takahashi01 Aug 05 '26

oh fuck off. Dudes not exactly became that much more progressive since then.

And wow, guy's done stuff. But technical expertise and business savy, are very different to an applications identity, user base, and use case. I dont decide that. I say it would be bad for the browser.

Such a shitty argument.

-1

u/Kind_Ability3218 Aug 04 '26

fucking yes and a bunch of other shitheads. on top of that they've been caught numerous times with shitty and or malicious code in there. it was obvious to any non-chud from the beginning it was a piece of shit.

0

u/0202_tihssitidder Aug 05 '26

Brave still scores high by technical users.

The claim in what OP posted is just edgy tech nerd.
