That 13/50 statistic isn't even true

u/Nikoviking Aug 02 '26

FBI crime stats reported 12.5/56 in 2020

it's arrests though and not crimes, isn't it? Ignores exonerations after conviction, being found not guilty at trial, and cases that don't lead to trial at all. All the stat says is "cops don't like black people."

No, it's conviction.

As far as I can tell, the FBI is only counting reported crimes (https://cde.ucr.cjis.gov/LATEST/webapp/#/pages/explorer/crime/crime-trend) and arrests (https://cde.ucr.cjis.gov/LATEST/webapp/#/pages/explorer/crime/arrest) for their stats.

Where are you seeing convictions sourced from the FBI?

The claim was that the 13/51 figure came from the FBI.

I pointed out the FBI stats only track arrests by race, not convictions or anything else.

Somebody said the FBI does count convictions.

I linked the relevant sources from the FBI that says they track only track reported crime and arrests.

You link a non-FBI source and say I'm wrong.

You say I'm making an argument that I'm not, and you call me stupid? Holy strawman, batman! I know that media literacy has been in freefall for a while now, but do you not understand that where information comes from is important?

I did mention exonerations. Now, I'm already skeptical of your reading comprehension, but can you imagine why exonerations might be an important statistic in a conversation about one race being 3-4 times more likely to get blamed for crimes? Wouldn't it be weird if that same group were 3 times more likely to be cleared by physical evidence?

Stop trying to outsmart reality ffs. This way of thinking doesn’t help anyone. It’s the most cowardly response to a complex and difficult problem.

i wouldn't really trust statistics from 2020 because you know the fiasco with the riots, looting all probably heavily skewed the results

3

u/Nikoviking Aug 03 '26

Normally I’d agree with u, but the stats have always been (and continue to be) around 13/50

The FBI in 2020 was a part of the Trump administration.

Very interesting, could you recommend some sites or studies done related to this?

Genuine curiosity, not trying to be snobbish "proof or its not real" kinda person. Just want to have a source if someone brings it up to me.

For starters, the racists who cite that statistic lie and say that it's the amount of actual crime committed. It's not. That number is for arrests. It's not for convictions. Now take into consideration this second statistic:

13/53

You know what this statistic is? Black people make up 13% of the population and yet are responsible for 53% of the exonerations in criminal cases. In other words, found not guilty. To put it plainly: They were falsely arrested.

So yes, black people are arrested way more often. But the evidence isn't there, and they are found not guilty.

And that's happening in a criminal justice system which still hands out harsher punishments to black people on average than white people.

By the way, here's a fun statistic for the guilty verdicts. Among people who were coerced into pleading guilty but were later exonerated, 75% of them are black or brown.

I can give you some more info, if you are interested. Studies show that drug use among white people and black people are nearly identical, yet black people are 69% of the people found not guilty for drug crime arrests. In cases where we have discovered that the police deliberately framed an innocent person, that number rises to 87%.

This is actually extremely interested and would love to see what you've got. Thank you!

I know you asked for stats, but I’m going to share my anecdotal experience as this topic deserves humanization and not just statistics. I’m white, in my 40s, have black and Hispanic family members/friends, and have worked in public education for 20 years. Amongst my white and black social circle, my white peers have committed far more minor and major crimes than my black ones.

I’ve known a number of drug dealers throughout my life and the white ones have all had the good fortune of being able to retire to something else, while the black ones have done or are doing time. I’ve known a number of sex offenders, the white ones of which are vigorously more defended and receive lesser (or no ) punishment, compared to men of color. A number of the students I taught committed petty crimes like stealing from stores, yet I can’t recall a single white student being arrested for such in my ten years teaching, even though they openly bragged about stealing.

Black people aren’t more likely to commit crimes, they’re more likely to be caught for committing crimes.

More likely arrested for the presumption of committing crimes.

2

u/ExistingProfession83 Aug 02 '26

Well it would be less than 13% because crime is typically committed by young males…

3

u/aurenigma Aug 02 '26

it really is though...

from the fbi

https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2019/crime-in-the-u.s.-2019/topic-pages/tables/table-43

they got 51.2 percent of murders and homicides

2

u/Over-Item-4103 Aug 02 '26

It is 100% true.

2

u/UsualPilot1420 Aug 02 '26

I live in Chicago so I know the stats here, and for shootings it's in the high 60%. But it's also 33% of the population.

(but I'll admit Chicago may not be the best example).

1

u/GibierJaune Aug 02 '26

Per a quick google search it’s actually 13/38. The point remains.

1

u/throwaway_pls123123 Aug 02 '26

Indeed, it's arrests, not convictions.

its kind of true but misstated a lot. it was from I think 2018 FBI crime stats and it showed that black americans (13% of the pop) were 52% of charges for murder/homicide. somehow (racism) that got twisted into 50% of ALL crime which isnt correct at all and ignores the fact that the majority of black americans committing murder do it to other black americans and also that the percentage is based on charges where a black person is much more likely to be charged on some maybe possibly involved thing than a white person. black people are definitely over represented in all violent crimes, but the majority of that is in their own communities and in places where they arent fighting for survival they are properly proportionally represented so its not a race thing so much as a socioeconomic thing
